Buttcheek elimination & the 242GT & 262C

Weren't the buttcheeks eliminated on the 242GT and 262C Bertone models? Most of the ones I see in pictures don't have them. If they were, does anyone have detailed shots of how Volvo reworked the metal to do this? I'm thinking this might be a good thing for my lowered 242 since having buttcheeks on a seriously lowered car seems like an accident waiting to happen. If I would do this I would want to make it look like a factory done deal so pics of the trunk areas of these models would sure help. What happened to the spare tire in these models?

I don't recall what the contour of the trunk floor looked like in that spot, but the OEM spare solution was a 'space-saver' (i.e. deflated) spare tire with a small electric pump.

I cut off my buttcheeks ans I'm welding in a flat panel along the same plane, more or less.
 
Not sure if it was a one year thing, but I know my 1979 242 GT does not have the spare tire wheel well. The next the the 1980 GT's got the wheel wells. I'll have to check to see if the 1978's had them. I know the 1978's still had the old style taillight, but the 1979 GT switched over to the 5 panel light. (Not sure if this all differ b/t European/Canadian/American/Australian? markets).


Fake edit: I plan to cut and weld the butt cheeks on my 1991 245, already took that horrid plastic panel of the back of the car and it looks a thousand times better!
 
I was thinking the new panel would either have to be like a regular buttcheek but with less dip to it or a flanged panel that runs even with the floor and then drops down to the bottom of the quarter panel creating a pinchweld. I would favor the first idea as pinchwelds tend to be rust magnets in my experience.

As mentioned, it was the '78 and '79 GT, not sure about the Bertones. According to a part number list I found, there are actually 2 different part numbers for the buttcheek sheet metal - one for standard, one for GT/Bertone. I'll try and scan the page. And I can confirm, a standard size spare will not fit - hence the need for a collapsible spare and compressor, looked like the same one that came with 911's.

I can't say I've ever heard of anybody here having clearance issues with the buttcheeks, I think other stuff hits first!
 
When I first got my two 240's each of them had buttcheeks that were all crunched up - and they were at the stock ride height - so someone must have had problems. My guess is they backed into a curb or something, maybe when backing out of a driveway.

I'll have to admit part of my motivation for wanting to do this is because I think it would make the car look better, too. I can't think of any other car right off hand that has spare tire wells like the 240/140's. On a bone stock Volvo I guess one could look at it as one of the things that make these cars unique, but on a modified car they look out of place to me.

Anyone at least have deteailed photos of he 1979 242 GT butt Wells?

I am having 75% of the trim in my 240 deleted, this would be the perfect time to delete the cheeks too.

I like buttcheeks too, not just because the extra storage and spare tire place, it also hides the exhaust and fuel tank. With a matching black coating at the bottom it is not even that noticeable.

It can be different on a later car with a light color though, because big commandos and brown color help with the look. Here's a pic with a plastic bumper...

Ohh shoot. You are right. Spare wheel and my gas can. Dang it..... how did I forget about that can!
