Default 93 regina b230f with aw71 won't shift up. kick down problem?

I have a 1993 945 rex regina b230f with an aw71 that won't shift up unless it hits about 5500 rpm.
I've had it for about 4 months now. This just started today. There's a third cable next to the throttle cable and cruise control cable that keeps getting slack. If I tighten it, it gets better for a mile or so but then it just gets loose again. This is the kick down cable right? If it is, can I replace it myself in my driveway with hand tools and a pair of jack stands? Thanks in advance for your help.

^It's the cable coming out of the orange rubber cap.^

Yes, that's your kick-down cable. It's binding and causing your delayed upshifts. Don't tighten and change the cable's setting, you need to free it up. You can try running a little ATF down it to see if that is enough, otherwise replacing will require dropping the trans pan.

Agreed, but that's only a band aid..

Look up, motorcycle cable oiler to keep you going!

Total pull is 2 inches. That is from throttle closed to wide open. I usually adjust from there to get the shift results I want.

FYI the part is $20 and it'll take you either 4 hrs to swap it using the old fluid and tranny gaskets.. Or $350 at the shop including a tranny flush and new gaskets..

(you have to pull the pan to change the cable)

The cable oiler will work as long as the rusted cable can be lubed. Stuck on wot in 1st by surprise got old pretty quick!! Lol

Thanks for the help guys. I don't know what I'm gonna do yet but I did find out that I can drive it no problem if I disconnect the cable at the top end and choose the gears myself. That will buy me enough time to decide if I wanna try to do it myself or save up and take it to a shop.
