Default M40 gear ratios?

Was there any difference in gear ratios between an early 142 m40 and a 1975 240 m40?

Well, let's see...

Starting at the start:
http://volvo.custhelp.com/app/homeV3

1970 140 Specifications page:
https://volvornt.harte-hanks.com/man...40_04.htm#pg59

M40
1st speed 3.13:1
2nd speed 1.99:1
3rd speed 1.36:1
4th speed 1:1
(with overdrive) - 0.79:1
Reverse 3.25:1

1975 240 Specifications page:
https://volvornt.harte-hanks.com/man...5_03c.htm#pg76

M40
1st gear 3.41:1
2nd gear 1.99:1
3rd gear 1.36:1
4th gear 1:1
Overdrive - 0.80:1
Reverse 3.25:1

If you believe them, first gear is a bit lower, overdrive (if it applies) a touch higher. Other ratios are the same.

Based upon Chilton's Repair and Tune-up Guide for the Volvo (1969), Overdrive didn't exist then, and above ratios shown were the same for a M40 without overdrive.

Well that would explain it. I wasn't sure if I was just imagining 1st gear feeling shorter in the '75 box. But what does confuse me is 4th also feeling shorter. I'm probably just imagining that one tho

According to the spec sheet the '75 wagon got a more aggressive rear end. So if you have a wagon you may be feeling that.

I have a 4.10 Dana 30 rear end with a Detroit Trutrac in it.

I did also just build a new big bore b20 with a vv71 so I'm sure the cam profile being different (as opposed to the K cam I had in the old b18) is playing tricks on my mind as well.

I had an original 1968 m40 in there but lunched it the first 30 miles driving the new engine. I put a 75 m40 out of a first year 240 in it afterwards which is only a temp solution until I can get the m410 (yes m410) in there.
