Default coolant leak

Hello,

I have a 92 n/a 240. I have a coolant leak from the back of the motor. There is a red pipe that goes from the water pump to the back of the motor. This is where I believe the leak is from, but I can't quite figure out what the name of the pipe is. I've searched and seen coolant bypass tube, heater bypass pipe and things of that sort but no definite answer. I don't have a bentley/haynes manual yet and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name of the pipe. Thanks in advance for any info.

Volvo calls it "water pipe." The leak is most likely from the heater hose that clamps on to that pipe or the heater valve. Stock volvo heater valves are prone to leaking.

Also the heater hoses could be cut/leaking.

They'll be visible from dvrs side ,behind engine, coming out of firewall.

FWIW, If Motor Mounts are broken, it'll allow the motor to move enough that the heater hose/s can/do get cut by the brace that holds the dipstick tube to engine block.

Broken motor mounts cause a myriad of problems on 240s & early 740s, some quite expensive. Replace your MMs if they are broken ASAP.

The broken mounts would kind of make sense....my brother and I were shocked by how much the motor would move when I slightly revved it...and I wasn't really driving it like a grandpa if you know what I mean. The coolant sprayed onto the hood (not like a fire hose but you get the point) and it is on the valve cover and it drips down onto all kinds of other things. It must have sprayed a few times and every time I stop somewhere I leave about a 4 inch circle of coolant that must have dripped down off of something. The thing I know for certain is that it's leaking from somewhere behind the motor where it is nearly impossible to see.

I'd check the MMs if I were you. 240s MMs are notorious for breaking.Especially the pass iside one.

Look at the oil pan and see if it's resting on the frt crossmember. This is what happens when they are really gone.

Also if you cannot remove the oil filter...you have broken MMs If so replace them with OEM Volvo 240 Diesel MMs. Much stiffer and stronger/longer lasting. I did this.

As for your original question, the pipe is part number 1332032

Another very important thing I forgot to add......my brother and I flushed the coolant and it was murky green instead of lime green...almost looked like it had oil in it, but there was no oil settling to the top. There is a thick oily layer of gunk on the block/near the back of the valve cover. I almost think the valve cover gasket is leaking into whatever coolant hose is leaking.

The coolant probably hasn't been changed in a while. It gets filled up with all the decomposing gunk that's filling up your coolant passages. It's normal, maybe do an actual fluid flush to clean it out, then refill with coolant. There's a petcock in the block for a reason.

I flushed the coolant and ran water through it while the lower radiator hose was still disconnected. I then put the hose back on to the radiator and filled it with water, capped it and let the motor run for about 3 minutes. Then I drained the water and it must have picked up the rest of the coolant left in the block (it was on flat ground) and then I flushed it one more time then filled it up with coolant/water. The coolant in the overflow tank hasn't really changed color as far as I can tell so you must be right.

The diesel mounts are ~$34 and ~$17 (PN 1229805 [drivers aka "left"]1272346 [passengers aka "right"], respectively) a piece on Tasca.

The "regular", fragile fellas are ~$13 (PN 274110 [driver] and 274111 [passenger])

Its worth the extra $4 for the passenger's side. I have never changed a driver's side mount..

Is the driver's side mount a pain? I'm still trying to find out what hose could be the problem so I can get it replaced ASAP.

Not any more than the passenger's side, I don't think. I just haven't ever needed to replace it - oil never leaks on it (not yet, at least..) I have only owned and worked on 3 240s for <6 years, though, so I may not be the best source of info for the wear/tear on that mount.

Maybe you should, while the car is running (before the coolant gets too hot ), turn on the heat and pop the hood. Squeeze the two heater hoses in the back - sounds like you might just have a tiny pinhole that is spraying when there's pressure. Perhaps squeezing the hoses (watch your eyes! How one "watches" their "eyes", I can't tell you) will reveal a small spurt of coolant, and then you have found the culprit!

Had my brother watch with a mirror and flashlight and as soon as I started it the bypass pipe leaked on the back of the head. I am going to get the new bypass pipe, but how do I go about getting it off the back? Thanks for the help.

There a bolt that holds it on side of block. And, IIRC, loosen the hose clamp that fastens the hos to it.

The trans/bell hsg was already removed when I did mine, which made it very easy. Still can be done with trans in though.

Also when ya replace the MMs, be sure to disconnect all coolant/heater hoses first , as a precaution to not damage rad, heater core, etc

Don't forget to check/replace the water pump seal 418411.

Might be difficult to get the clamps off of the hose that attaches to the pipe..

Got the coolant bypass pipe and replaced it. What a pain that was. We also did the squeeze test on the heater hoses before hand and the top S like one had a little slit in it. We got the universal 5/8 heater hose from AutoZone but it wouldn't bend enough without kinking. Gonna go to Volvo tomorrow to get the heater hose and diesel motor mounts and then flush the cooling system a couple times then fill it back up. Hopefully no more cooling system problems after this. Thanks for all the help guys.
