OldSchoolEuro's 84 244DL Build

Here are some pictures of one the calipers painted. Yeah I kind of did a lot of coats and looks sort of ****ty. Still contemplating on taking the calipers apart and having them powdercoated. I sort of want to enjoy the new brakes though...I also had the adapter coated too.

Then we have here one of the completed adjustable torque rods. Polyurethane bushings pushed in. Coated and nice.

Did you spray them or brush the paint on?

I masked my stock Volvo 240's calipers off really well and sprayed them Came out really nice and smooth. I used the Dupli Color caliper paint,.

It was brushed on. Like I said I suck at doing paint/body work. Painted it with the Duplicolor Brake Caliper Paint Kit. I think I might try again on the other caliper and just put it on. I'll powdercoat them later on if I feel like it.

Better/smoother finish if spray 'em. I sprayed the hell out of mine. 5 coats IIRC.

Yeah that's what I did on my stock calipers. Probably should have done the same here. But PC would be fantastique!

As you rotate tires/remove wheels for pad replacement time, paint will be easier to touch up the nicks/scratches incurred.

Hard to install wheels/tire assembly without nicking the caliper. Hard to be real careful not to do so I found

Would be hard to touch up the powdercoat I think.

I'll have 25mm spacers in the front because the Polaris can't clear the FD calipers at all which leaves plenty of clearance. I'll be fine because I tend to do things slowly and carefully (for the most part), but for time sake I'll just paint them and be done with it.

If I feel like it later on, I'll disassemble the caliper and have them PC'ed. We will see...

UPDATE:

Brakes:

I ran into a bit of a problem with the brake lines I ordered. Since I couldn't make a hardline that comes off the caliper to the flex line on the strut housing bracket (the way the FD calipers are, the line port was super close to the strut housing bracket and it was at too weird of an angle to make a hardline), I had a line coming off the frame that goes directly to the caliper. Well, the line was a little too short since it binded at full lock but I also noticed the rubber sleeve on the fitting was coming into contact with my sway bar. No worries, I ordered a slightly longer line but with a 45 degree angle fitting on the caliper side. So this should give me about 1.25 inch extension of the line. Hopefully it works when it comes in!

Wheels/Tires:

Bought some new tires (as stated above). Heard some good reviews so I will try them out. I'll be taking the Conti DWS off and selling them to regain some money. Wheels went in to get powder coated in the factory silver color so it should look really nice. Will be putting on front and rear spacers as well.

I SHOULD be done with this before I leave the country so stay tuned for some pictors.

(y) one of my all times fave builds...four door reprezent!!!

Danke! 244's FTW.

So small update:

Calipers are on (still have to paint the other one but just bolted on there just to make sure everything fit). I may have to put a thin washer in between the caliper and adapter mounting bolts because the disk is awfully too close to the caliper. I couldn't get a good picture but here's what it looks like at the moment...

These damn m-springs as they're called that are supposed to come with the calipers but I have had to order about 4 or 5 different brake hardware kits to collect the correct springs and clips. Finally have one side finished, but still waiting for the other kit to come in. Hopefully it has the 2 m-springs I need.

Here is a picture confirming that you will need to have at least a 5 mm spacer for the 17x7 Polaris wheels to clear the RX-7 FD calipers. Not sure if its the same deal for the FC's. Put on my spare wheel to demonstrate.

Next steps:

So this week I will get my other clips in for the passenger side. I'll paint the passenger caliper tomorrow. Hopefully bleed the brakes by Thursday. Wheels should be back from the powder coaters by the end of the week. Pictures then.

Oh and I forgot. I bolted these adjustable thingies made by some crazy russian dancing guy on E that looks like Homer.

Also, I forgot to add. I'll be cutting the lips on the rear fender in a couple weeks so that sick new Hankooks don't get shredded up.

Are all the 'M' clips the same size that you're using? On the 2nd gen calipers I've used, one clip has longer legs than the other so they're not the same.

Yeah all of the M clips I'm using are the same. I had quite some trouble trying to source the correct ones because I was sent a random assortment of parts from the FC and FD calipers.

I asked a few RX-7 guys and they confirmed all of the M clips should be the same.

Nice pictures of a fantastic car! Really like the effort you have done with the details!

Thanks man. I'll upload some more photos when I finish doing more things to the car. Only a few more small areas of the car I would like to work on and I think it will be finished.
