I'm trying to figure out how that stays up against the rear seat. There is clips on the wood and metal springs bolted under the floor. I thought the spring mounted the clip but it doesn't want to naturally move that way without deforming the metal. So how does that flap stay right to the rear seat

I had to battle mine too. The latter models have the two springs. Mine pulled out of the plywood so I got creative. You can see all the fasteners I used in the last image. Works fine now. I like the old linkage style better.

The springs hold it down. As I recall, the hinge was binding so I reinforced it with additional hardware along it's length as the plywood is so thin.

I definitely had to put "geez, really?" levels of tension on the springs to get them into position and screwed down.
