Volvo 240 mechanical cooling fans, direct or all with clutch?

Time to start thinking about the cooling system of the redblock when I get around to putting the motor back in, did any of the 240 (or 740) models come with direct driven fans or did they all use a clutch setup?
 
There are two styles of 240 clutch fans also. Early one with aluminum blades, and of course the later one with plastic/nylon blades.

According to fcpgroton, they are thermal clutches? Is that correct?
(at least a few of the turbo specific models I looked at)
 
Looked thermal to me. The back (or front? Don't remember now) had a pretty temp-sensitive looking coil on it when I removed it to do the water pump.
