The target market shifted some but the main thing was the sudden widespread availability of squirters. They are clearly made by one major sub-contractor (if you look at a whole raft of different brand motors) and similar to the sudden industry wide use of the Modine water oil-cooler..suddenely a whole bunch of engines started coming with squirters..

Same pistons as before, same oil pumps, same rod and main bearings same everything..

Its a small 'cherry on top" thing, not anything "decisive"..

An example of the sudden availability:
Ford built a car expressly to beat Volvo 240 with B21 in European Championship Touring Car Championship in Group A...

production began for 1987 model year with this spray bar from the oil pump:



Then they went rallying with a 4wd version and revised the pump and spray bar


And then in 1993 they went to squirters

Big deal.

I just bought a 1995 (build date 09 94) 940 Turbo donor car, so a squirter, with only 155,000 miles. Will use all the turbo bits, the aw71 transmission and possible the rear differential.
