So i bought a boost cntroller

yesterday, (I got bored of 6psi rather quickly.. i know... no self control...)and anyways, ever wonder how long a

180k mile, NA M46 would last behind 18psi of heavily intercooled boost into a modified B23ft?

The answer

is about 10 minutes. Put it to the floor at around 4000rpm's in 4th gear, headed up a slight grade. Rocks in a

blender. Followed by some sort of weird over-rev, cyclic shock on the engine, engine also make bad noises.

So ya the f'er is toast man. It was the most glorious implement of thrust ever for those 10 minutes

though.

Worth every fucking cent. :D

The plan is to swap the engine/trans from my 242 in (with

turbo reinstated). I will have to use some restraint and drive with a stockish engine for a month or 2 until I

rig up something a little more fun.

I have been kicking myself after some of the more recent threads, I

was kinda unhappy with a few aspects of the motor anyways.

So, I plan to:
Build with a tighter squish:

0.030-0.35 :?:
Open the chambers up some more, and do big valves.
bronze guides
uprated

valvesprings

Some things up in the air are what the actual dimensions will be (the cosworth pistons are

still a thought) and what actual components to use.

I'm thinking I might just stay with a standard sized

motor- hardened M rods and forged mahle flat tops. Depending on how mutilated the B23 in there is- i may have it

sleeved to 96mm.
If I got with a B23 bore size, it will definitely be a sleeved b23 block. i think that is

the answer.

Does anyone have anything they want to buy from Unitek?
Despite their recent slaggings,

their pistons are simply dirt cheap.

Am I dissappointed? Sure. That was a lot of work. And the stock

B21ft will be much less fun. Am I excited about being able to have a decent car to drive, and shop space at work

so i can build something exactly how I want to? Absolutely. And am I wiser for the experience? Absolutely.

So it's all good- ya gotta pay ta play sometimes.

Oh also wanted to mention there is no chance the

new engine will be mated to a Volvo transmission... so we all know what that means...

Damn Kenny, 6lbs to 18lbs? Ever heard of

moderation? :) It hauled some ass for those glorious 10 minutes though?

I just kept doing pulls in 2lb increments.
I

had lots of fuel and lots of air charge cooling. But ya it was absolutely mental. The 18psi was on 93 as well,

never a trace of det.

kenny , itll b einterexting to see what valve

sizes you come up with , and if they are sourced ones from unitek . The V6 exhaust valves are 37mm (i think), i

dont know what length though , not sure about inlets .

Why are you going to stiffer valve springs ,are you

going past 7000 . Thought the std vavletrain was good for that .

Hey Kenny, I wasn't going to say anything

untill I have it in my hands but John Parker at www.v-performance.com finished my T5 adapter last week. He's

making them available for the public now.

Damn.. there goes that last surprize but I like

you.

Email him. Actually, the bellhousing requires some machining

so the more people who send in bellhousings at the same time, the cheaper its going to be. Its about 250 for the

adapter and bellhousing as of right now afiak.

Good luck

Nice :) You sure you didnt just beat up the

crank bearings?

Give it another shot when you pull the tranny. Now I know what to avoid on my car :D

ya I dunno what the damage is like, I'll

probably know next week.

No lesosns in moderation to be learned here. We don't build these things to be

"moderate".

The key point is definitely to find out what went wrong and correct it though, there is

nothing "cool" about just blowing up motor after motor.

I'm not proud of blowing it up, but I have no

regrets either.

Doug that adapter lloks great. 250 is a great price too.

18psi for 10 minutes!
You lucky SOB,

mine only lasted about 5 minutes at those boost levels . You have a TDO5-12b right. How did that spool @ 18psi.

My T3 .48 seemed to outspool my 16g, even with the auto.

Nice to see the T5 adapter ! There is hope yet.

Do you think @ T5 would work in a 144 or 122 ?

The 12b had crap for top end. The midrange was

pretty vicious though.

The top end was still better than my Garrett turbo'd B21ft, but I'm certain it

is because of the K cam vs the T cam.

I'd say the 12b started making boost sooner than my .48 T3, but

the pressure itself did not rise as fast. So it probably got to 6psi faster, 10psi about the same, and then past

that it was actually slower depending on gear and RPM.

Hard comparisons though- different head, different

cam, different exhaust, different diplacement, etc. But I think you can still get a feel for the overall boost

curve, and overall I am not real impressed with the mitsu. The early 6psi means hanging the end out around

corners is fun, but that's about it.

The "new" engine will have a Garrett for sure.

And ya the

adapter could definitely work in a 1 series car.

Josh,

actually he's been adapting the

OHV motors to T5's for quite some time. I sent him a bellhousing from my "spare" m46 to use as a template (thats

my bellhousing in the picture).

I'll start a new thread about this.. damn I really wanted to keep it

quiet till its in the car. But I digress... this is as good a time as any.

Oh, mine's holding up to 18psi

blasts from my old 60 trim. You guys just must be extra hard on yours ;) Now, the holset dialed in with the MS

setup.. probably won't last long

I powershifted it pretty hard for the 1-2 shift @ the track. I am also sure

the extra stress from the DR's could have helped with it's demise.

Thanks for the info.

So you broke 2nd? That is interesting, most

people tend to break 4th in a similar fashion to me.
I might guess that the 3.31 rear diff had an effect as

well in my case.
I do like the tall gears though.

Doug you have any ideas on the tranny support

brace? How does it line up with the T5 or have you gotten that far yet?

The mustang T5 has a 2.95 1st gear, which should

be pretty decent with a short diff.

A 2.95 1st and a 3.31 diff would be a bastard though.
