From what i remember when adjusting mine is if you add too much preload on the plastic threaded part it just skips, right?
The OE coiled metal sheath doesn't skip and it has basically an infinite adjustment range.
When people are snapping cables? What snaps? A low friction cable with durable housing is obviously a top priority.
The method of failure (or at least for me) is when the pivot pin at the pedal wears, and the yoke for the cable doesn't articulate properly fatiguing the cable where it enters the yoke causing it to snap.
Seems to me the OE cables would last basically forever if the pivot pin was kept in good shape and greased.
Hence the value of good used OE.
