Andrewhans 240 LS Swap, Going for 8's

Well, it's too early to tell but the engine might be hurt.

Drove into work(25miles) with no noises at all, completely normal, went to take the car for lunch and around 2k I get a very faint rod knock type sound. Rev'd the engine(2k rpm) with hood up by hand and couldn't really hear anything odd. Sat in car and brought it up with the pedal and right around 2k you can hear something. Oil pressure is exactly the same as it always is. Going to grab fresh oil(5w-40) and filter(wix 57060XP) on the way home, change it and see if there is any difference.

Maybe I'll disconnect injectors one by one and see if I can narrow it down to a certain cylinder before I leave work. If it goes away after killing a cylinder I'll know its a rodknock. The 40psi hot idle oil pressure doesn't scream that there's a spun bearing so that part is throwing me off a little.

Also thinking maybe tq converter/flexplate issues. Will keep you guys updated on what's up.

Possible loss after a big win lol

We shall see.

Perspective Andrew -- runs high 9's @ 140 on turbo'd basically stock 367,000 mile VERY used engine. That's all win. Even if the motor now lets go completely -- it's all win good buddy.

So on the way home the engine completely let go haha

Made a TINY bit of noise over lunch. Was completely silent when I went to go leave. Drove the car carefully checking oil pressure and listening intently at all times. Everything sounded great and car made no weird noises.

Got greedy and made a really quick 21-22psi pull. Sounded good. Made another one because, why not, right? Well that was the straw that broke the camels back.

Windowed the block and left pieces of engine in the belly pan and oil covering the bottom of the car.

Haven't torn down anything yet, just got the car back home.

It let go in spectacular fashion.

I'm extremely proud of this engine and will 99% likely just put another high mileage 4.8 in there, pull half a degree of timing and let it eat again.

On a plus side about 30seconds after I coasted to a stop a friend pulled over in his truck, picked me up, we went and got his trailer, picked up the car and dropped it off at home.

Could not have asked for better timing.

Sad day but that engine owed me absolutely nothing and gave me a 9 sec pass at over 140mph.

How did I know?

Nice job with that one. How much work would a 5.3L or a 6.0L be instead? Santa Claus is comin' to town....

Not much at all. I may be upgradeing to a gen 3 5.3 shortblock with gen 4 pistons and rods in it. I need to see how much my friend wants for his spare parts

Also not too soon emotionally, just haven't tore the car down yet. I do at least have one photo of oil pan and side of block that is decent

You were probably like. **** I hope the cam is okay

I literally said that and the oil pan were my main concerns right afterwards talking to my friends who picked me up lmao

awww bummer. but, SBE 4 LYFE for a reason! it will save you a little bit of future time if you get gen4 guts, they are beefy. bummer about the oil pan, any word on the cam yet?

Haven't pulled it but Im pretty sure a rod hit it.

Going to upgrade the cam to the 228/230 .585 cam(sloppy stage 2) and Im stepping up to gen 4 5.3 guts in a gen 3 block. Got two shortblocks(1 gen 3 5 3 and a gen 4 5.3) for $300 from a buddy.

Im bummed about the oil pan too... not cheap. I agree though, these SBE are so strong and cheap it doesnt make sense to forge one of these engines. I will probly go with new headgaskets and head bolts this time though. Just so I can put more timing in it in the midrange without pushing a tiny amount of coolant like I was before.

Here's a few photos of damage. Got both heads off. One piston completely gone. Cam may have been hit. Reached in and grabbed a few pieces through the bore lol

If you have a gen 3 block with the late model guts I mayyy have a full set of speed master studs I'll send you. I'll have to check when I get back home

Oh man that would be amazing! I really want studs now that Im leaning on it a bit more. I'm pretty sure I could easily get away with another set of single use bolts and new gaskets but studs would be great with new gaskets.

any word on the cam yet?

Cam is toast. Big nicks in it from the rod. I might be able to clean up the heads. Entire shortblock is junk.

Its not like I need to go faster anyway lol. I think between the displacement bump and cam upgrade I could pick up 30whp at the same boost level. If I add the billet 7875 center section that should give me another 30-40whp too.

I'd like to hit 9.6-9.7 @ 145mph next while driving there and back. Hell even consistant 9 second passes would be really cool
