Hello and yes your reading that title correctly. This is my first post here I did not see any restrictions on new member posts so If I am breaking any rules please forgive me and allow me to do whatever is required before I add to this.
Ok so heres the story about three years ago i bought this bitchin 2001 v70 2.4t for a mere $600. the family had been allowing their son to drive it and he'd ruined the turbo leaking oil into the exhaust and smoking enough to make James bond jealous. One fifteen dollar rebuild kit later and she no longer smokes and has been running great ever since. I like to know my car so I got a repair manual and started studying up with it and online. Suffice to say I fell in love with volvo's engine design. Well in the process of all this learning I found out about the newer R version and the T5's etc. Now i am planning on getting an 04 R this coming year and have begun planning a rebuild/huge upgrade to the 01. I'd like to make these ricer guys and the V8 lovers around here laugh and cry. Laugh when I tell them my volvo wagon will beat them and cry when it does.
I'm going to tear the engine completely down and CNC the cylinders out replacing them with wet sleeves. Performance and billet everything internals, head studs, race suspension, larger intercooler, etc. It's all going to take some time I'm not rich but so long as I have a daily driver I can take my time with this project.
Now the meat and potatoes of my post. Originally I was going to go for a twin turbo set up one low pressure one high pressure to minimize lag. low pressure probably just the stock one with a ball bearing instead of the journal bearing and a really nice high pressure aiming at near 1,000 ponies. Then I found out about the newer "E-drive" engines and what volvo has managed there, a 2 liter super turbo with 300 horses the only 300+ HP 2 liter production engine in existence. I want to emulate that but on a much larger power scale. Wanted to see what info anyone has on superchargers that will fit my engine with as little modification as possible. Of course still gonna go with a high pressure ball bearing turbo to back that up.
so yes I know that this is crazy and I might just blow the head off studs be damned etc. The cars seen better days and with the torture that that kid put it through I think it's gonna need a rebuild anyways. I just wanna have fun and experiment. If I destroy anything I'll learn the limits, the billet parts will likely survive, and I can do it again tamed down to live long with a different head and block ( can find them all over for about $300 used).
And the questions part. First has anyone had their head ported and whats a good place in the states to send it to? lots of air has to have lots of room. are there any aftermarket headers out there for these? If not that's something I can have made in fact if all else fails any machining I can likely get done at a friends work but it's not what they usually do so looking for an experienced machinist who has ported heads and built headers before as well as cnc milled out cylinders. East coast US preferred as close to NC as possible doesn't have to be all one place. Then there's the supercharger. I can get just about any turbo the only real constraint is space because I don't want the car to look abnormal so not cutting holes in the hood or nothing. However I cannot find any source for a supercharger that might fit or at least is small enough and could be modified to fit. worse case scenario due to the cost is to buy one of the ones they made for the new engines but unless I find one that's been wrecked that is a choice that would likely fall to me going back to the twin turbo plan.
So any and all ideas and input are welcome even the negative, also if anyone knows how to get sponsored some or a few freebie parts that'd be great. When it comes time to turn wrenches I will video document the entire process very thoroughly because it will also give volvo owners allot of how to guides on nearly every mechanical and suspension part in the car, something that you tube is sorely lacking for these vehicles compared to more popular imports and domestics.
Hope this isn't too much of a TLDR for a first post and some of you guys can help me plan this thing out. Heres to Fast Volvo's!
