I am having a friendly debate about the 740 interior options with a fellow Volvo nob who is a 850 Swedespeed guy.
I am 99% positive 740's have three possible seats.
1. Cloth

2. Leather

3. The fairly seen pepper or checkered

The debate is, was pepper only special order on turbo only sedans,
I swear I had a wagon with the same interior.
I've owned over 10 740's and only have seen one with pepper and it was a 1989 turbo wagon from a one owner car.
What cars were available with what interiors?
We both searched until our eyes bleed last night and couldn't find an definitive answer.
It's a whole bottle of Patron Silver so I sure hoping i'm right:nod:

There’s a black “pepper” interior on a 1990 740 sedan with Rex/Regina fuel and ignition gear at one of my local junkyards. I’m fairly certain it’s original.

1) Plush velour
2) leather
3) pinstripe velour (almost looks like the 240 velour, but contrasting colors)
4) tweed (aka "pepper") cloth (1989-92 base and GL models)
5) houndstooth/checkerboard cloth/leather

First two options were the original choices. The pinstripe velour was 1985 740 Turbo only, replaced by the checkerboard stuff in 1986. The 940/960 cars had similar options, but, 1 and 3 were not available, and the leather pleating was more like the tweed cloth pleating. The checkerboard cloth was dropped after the 1992 model year in the 940 Turbo, and after 1990 or 1991 in the 740 Turbo.

Checkerboard was the standard upholstery on the 1986-on Turbo cars, with leather being the option. I test drove an '87 745Ti last fall that had the checkerboard interior.

The houndstooth is a lot more rare on a wagon(all turbo cars) I've seen it 3 times in total. 2 in black, 1 in tan (which is even more rare). I actually just recently encountered this interior(for a wagon) and I went ahead and grabbed all the seats (even swapped already).

The leather from 91-95 940's & 92-94 960's is really comfortable. The older leather style hurts my back like a mofo(really no lumbar support). I had to stop driving my daily driver(765T) because of those older style leather seats. I'm about to swap some seats from an S90 which are way better.

This is houndstooth interior. Some of the seats need the stitching redone but its minor work that I'll have done professionally.
