It is hard for me to imagine how the symptoms you describe could be caused by the countergear/shaft. It is one chunk of steel and runs on one shaft. But things can break, and you are the guy who is looking at it, so I will breathlessly await your report.

I didn't see where you reported whether you found metal on the drain plug- did I miss that? It could tell you a lot.

Very small amount of fine shavings, no chunks.

I broke an M46 once. I shifted into 2nd and there was a really nasty sounding thud and crunch, then it seemed to drive ok but it would grind going into 1st if the car was moving at all. Ended up driving it for a couple more years like that figuring it was already broken. Eventually did an autopsy and it turned out a snap ring that holds one of the gears had come apart and got ground up in the gears. The 1st gear synchro then acted as a thrust bearing and eventually fused to the gear. At least the gearboxes are still relatively easy to find, it's the overdrives that are rare and parts are unobtanium.
