The 245 GT, or: another BMWolvo

have you been to the rdw yet? i think we've got a "245 m50b25/30 meet" coming up!

Yup, the car is street legal. And my daily driver. I'll update this thread soon but I can already reveal that I'm very happy with the way the car drives. It just pulls and pulls. Drop me a line and we'll do some 0-100 and 80-120 runs ;)

Looks great! I'm digging the Volvo Pea Green more and more.

Using two transmission mounts on both sides of transmission instead of the stock Volvo one-in-the-center -type is definitely a good idea. I had a transmission crossmember with two transmission mounting pads in use too, and it makes the whole engine and transmission package a whole lot more stable. The engine doesn't rock around nearly as much.

Does anyone make motor and trans mounts for these BMW swaps or are all the mounts/crossmember stuff custom?

Looks really great Arn!

So the car has been my daily since mid december. Put almost 5K km on it since then. I have done some minor things to it, like installing a working speedo using gps, etc. etc. whatever...

...because I noticed something was not right and did this:

The head looks OK but I haven't given it a thorough inspection yet. Then I noticed this on piston number 1:

Notice the carbon build-up as well. I guess it's been running lean and detonating. So the engine has to come out, and I need to locate a m54b30 piston. The rest of the pistons look clean. I suspect a defective injector but nothing has been tested so far, I just took the head of this afternoon and by the time I was finished I had to go home in a hurry.

Loving it! :)

But please tell me how you got the tachometer to work, I was under the impression that the signal from the ecu was wrong for this type instrument?

It is. I looked on a dutch electronics forum and asked around. There was an electrical engineer who just shrugged and converted it for me for like 60 euro. Apparantly it is quite easy when you know electronics.

So update time. This is what my bearings looked like after ~2500 miles. There was a lot wrong with the rebuild, including a too rough hone and piston ring gaps almost lining up. I brought it away to a specialist and he is rebuilding using an m52b28 aluminium block and the m54b30 pistons. I expect it back sometime next week.

So with everything out I decided I might as well change some things. First of all, the engine mounts were too stiff. I made it track car but I built a GT car. So new mounts using bmw rubbers.

Also the clutch was too light. I used a lightened m20 single mass flywheel (5.6 kg). Again, GT, not racecar. And I decided to make it a 6-speed using one from a e46 320d. They're dirt cheap.

6-speed is huge.

But fits...

The box is under a different angle (10 degree difference) than the engine so making the bearbox mount was a challenge.

I had another prop shaft made to fit and rebalanced, and I have painted all the new mounts so now everything is just waiting for the arrival of the engine. Tick tock...

Ah, that's too bad. I was hoping there was an easier solution to the tach, but I really don't need one anyhow. :p

Yes, the angle is different on diesel engines, you could have gotten a GS6-37BZ from a newer 520i instead, I believe those have the same angle as M50 etc.

What final ratio are you running in your rear axle?

Right now it is 3.73 but I have a 3.31 which will be installed sometime soon.

The diesel gear box was 250 euro, the cheapest 330i etc. 6-speed I could find was 600 euro. Ratio is pretty much alike.

Small update:

Engine is back. M52 aluminium block. I had a prop shaft shortened and balanced for the 6-speed. Again, 240 rear part, m90 front part, new center bearing. I'm also redoing the suspension. I had this planned as a few weekend jobs, but since the car is out of the running, might as well do it know. So in with Kaplhenke qsrc thingies, braided brake hoses, red stuff, ipd sways, and lsd.
Yes, lots of cash in this car, but all in all it's cheaper than a brand new suzuki swift. You choose.
