242GT 1979 Group C Race Car

Holy Sheet! You found SVM242!!!
Is this the car that was advertised for ~$6k a few years ago, somewhere Sydney-ish? If I'd known it was SVM, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat - the story was too vague and it just sounded like an overpriced GT... In fact, it was a dirt-cheap GpC car...

I trust you've been in contact with Dick Prince who runs the GpA 242GT?

Yes it is the car and it was not well advertised with no mention of the paperwork. Once we saw the paperwork the decision was pretty much made and it makes getting the all important CAMS COD and historic Logbook that much smoother. Yes we know and have met and raced against Richard. He runs the Genuine Group A 240T which is a great car with good history, A very unique Volvo and very quick even against the V8's.

Momo Star wheels or Gemini like in Volvo terms (15*7 with 22 Positive offset) arrived from the good ole USA (Thanks Tom P). Here is one pictured next to the Bathurst Globe on one of the spare cars. We are going to use the Momo's for the wets and the Bathurst Globes for the slicks.

We have modified the cage for safety and are off to buy a race seat and new 6 point harness on Friday to get up to the mechanics for fitment. Work is progressing

Very nice! Shame it needs to stay non turbo. Is there any way the car could be changed to group a spec?

What was your previous race car? I'm guessing you're otherwise a holden man?

No Sorry - It has to be group C Spec for historic racing purposes.

Previous race car was a VK group A Commodore

K and I went and bought a Cobra Suzuka seat and ROM 6 Point harness today both FIA approved. Delivered to our mechanic and also checked on progress. Here is fuel storage and delivery system almost finished with Volvo standard pump and damper still to be mounted and braided fuel line to be run to the standard Volvo fuel delivery line that runs from rear of car into engine bay. The roll cage has also been modified for greater safety with some other mods still to be done including additional side intrusion bars beside driver and passenger and another bar behind drivers seat once seat mounting and positioning has been sorted. This will be done next week and he will then fit new injectors and seals and fire the engine.

The rear parcel deck and tunnel will be lined with aluminium to separate fuel storage from cabin. As Group C race cars ran standard interior apart from drivers seat and safety belts and cage we will be fitting our mint interior up. This includes rear parcel deck, seat belts (will not be used during racing), door cards etc. We also have a mint board to fit to front of the rear boot area to cover the aluminium panels that will be installed in the indented holes. Our trimmer is modifying the standard upper rear seat insert to fit around the roll bar mounts onto the rear wheel arches. The bottom insert will just fit up as normal. We also have an as new hood lining that will be fitted when we remove the screens for paint. The passenger seat will be standard Volvo.

Here are the progress pics

Sorry No progress to report at present on the car. Still with our mechanic. We did however attend an historic race meet at Lakeside Raceway in Brisbane last weekend and in the course of conversation with a stall holder selling memorabilia it was his car that caused the damage to the back of the Volvo during the race in 1979. His co-Driver was driving it at the time. He is going to check his photo archive for us to see if he has anything from 1979 that we dont already have.

It is a small world

Peter
