"Brick in a box" - (1991) 245 "stealth" project car

Awful lotta coughing going on......hahaha.

So i guess I'm missing the tab that bolts the down pipe to the bell housing...makes sense now why there wasn't a flex pipe or more hangers in the first place

Yes, hanging a downpipe soley on a conical flange is a pretty bad idea......hence why Volvo didn't do it, lol. On later downpipes it was a removable (and much easer to access) band style mount. But as you can see, on the 240 Turbo it was much more.....involved.

Since a downpipe alone, does not an exhaust make.....

Tomorrow the over-axle 3" fun begins

Alright, So after much research and time spent working under the car I decided i wanted to improve upon my original over-axle exhaust system...

While some would have you believe that going over axle with 3" is difficult, the much more likely scenario is simply that they are lazy  I actually won a "cat back " magnaflow system from a local shop at a Mazda meet a couple years back and since they actually make performance exhaust systems for real sports cars, I figured it would be better used on the "Green Dragon" I purchased a few mandrel bends, since their in-house bends are of the crush variety, and a 9" dynomax resonator just in case we couldn't fit a big enough Magnaflow.

Not sure if the double hangers were truly necessary back there, but I can stand on the exhaust and compress the suspension

Lookin good. Bet it sounds better too. Now you have freed up some flow, you should feel it come on quicker I would presume.

Thanks! It certainly sounds deeper and WAAAY more quiet. Those last two conjectures however are a bit off the mark

The ideal turbo exhaust is an open megaphone on the back of the turbine housing, and an open 3" downpipe is a lot closer to ideal (from a performance standpoint) than a full 3" exhaust with a muffler.

As a result spool is a little slower, and the diesel turbo whistle is gone. Honestly, with the Cobra Airbox, it sounds a lot like modern turbo engines. It just scoots, with a slight burble/rumbble from the exhaust.

Overall I'm happy, as this is ultimately a daily driver-road trip wagon-tow vehicle.

Went to get on it in the wet a few days ago, and predictably it start stepping sideways, I eased off the gas and was expecting it to straighten up as smoothly as it stepped out........But that was NOT the case at all! What violence! Such snap!, much body roll!

Now I come back and look at this video, and it's quite apparent what the problem was....... Stock springs are definitely not stiff enough to run a non-sway bar setup.

Perfect opportunity to install the rear turbo/gt sway bar I've been holding on to. most difficult part was finding the stock bar to scavenge the brackets from, since it was half buried in my junk pile behind the shed.

GfACI8

Now I need to get some bushings and hardware so I can install the front bar.

One thing this car has really needed, (especially since installing a manual boost "controller" ) is a wideband. I went with an Innovative LC-1 and XD16 guage mainly because....I already had them from the RX-7. After ordering a new O2 sensor I spent some quality time with the green dragon.

I learned my lesson about hardwiring in electrical components a long time ago, a little fuse box goes a long way to making your life (and subsequent accessory installs) much easier.

A little velcro action for the controller....
kus3tE

JUST enough wire to route the sensor into the cockpit using the factory firewall grommet

And ......it works! Now wo figure out this random occasional high load high rpm stumble

Back in action!

We need more updates lol.

Ask, and Ye shall receive....

So a friend of mine is a mobile mechanic and he drives a 335i BMW (yea...I know not the most practical vehicle  ) Unfortunately he was rear ended on the interstate about 2 years ago and his car was totaled, I decided to let him borrow the green dragon while he worked it out with the insurance company and searched for a replacement vehicle.

A year later....... he no longer needed the services of the dragon, but then again, neither did I ...

So sadly she sat at his house for another year until I sold the silver wagon, and made some space at the house. Now the Green Dragon is back!!! and with the RX-8 getting ready to go down for a carbon clutch and custom exhaust, it's time to Re-stage Zero and pick up where we left off

The Plot Thickens....

So, a lot has happened since the 245r left my possession, included a lot of other cars being stored at my house....something that apparently my neighbors didn't appreciate. One of them happened to be the 242 Group A from a few pages back. In it's non-running condition it was the primary target of the complaint and thus moves needed to be made.

I had no idea what kind of moves those would be until my buddy forwarded over a FB marketplace ad for a 245 Classic. The seller wasn't interested in any trades, so naturally two days later... ;-)

Both cars need, and deserve a bit of TLC but....now there are two green wagons on mesh wheels that both run....don't think the neighbor will be able to figure it out
