Hey folks, the police in Monterey County feel that I need a new windshield (and that I should probably watch my speed a bit more closely), so I thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade my windshield to much nicer '91-93 Pilkingtons.

What do you think about doing the rear as well? Is it the same deal (just simple replacement by the glass shop guy), or do I need something in addition? The three main reasons I'm considering replacing the rear at the same time are:

1. Road noise - Do you think replacing the rears will have a noticeable impact on wind noise at freeway speeds?
2. Windshield defroster - My rear defroster doesn't work, but I haven't done any troubleshooting yet to figure out what it is, so a new element might not fix the issue. While we're on the subject, are there ways to repair the element that is in-fact the issue?
3. Looks - The newer fronts look so much better, do you think it'll be miss-matched and funny looking if I don't do both?

Please, give me your thoughts...especially if they're about the above topic.

Noise isn't gonna change with a new rear windshield.

If you want the looks of the new style rear window seal, just pull the metal trim out of the rubber.

Rear window is relatively easy. I heard the new style rubber seal is NLA so you might have to pull one at a yard.

Hi Joe!!

thats all i have on the subject...
Thanks Keith, you're awesome!

What does it look like without the metal trim? There isn't a big gap around the window or anything?

When they installed the Pilkington windshield on my car they used the universal rubber trim and it looks pretty good.
No major difference between that and the OEM '93s?

Nope looks like OE because it is OE.

Looks like this if you do that to your current rear seal. Looks fine, its just a less chunky look. It is not as flush and slim as the late style rear window seal (the glass is the same 86-93, the seal changed in 90 or 91).

I have an aftermarket ppg front windshield (91-93 style) and it looks like crap compared to the Volvo seal. Its just a rubber flange that doesn't want to sit correctly against the body. I hate it. I have no idea what I'm going to do when I replace it, but I want something that looks like the factory seal next time.

Simple insist on a plikington.

They usually keep the windshields on a rack at the glass companies, and the seal gets distorted anyway.

That's what I here, and that's what I'll do. I like the look of the removing the rear trim well enough. As a matter of fact, I can't really tell the difference without seeing them side-by-side, so it sounds like a plan.

Also, by the way Neptune, I really dig all the black window treatments you've got. Very nice.

AHHH!!! I called the windshield shop today and they said there is no Pilkington distributors anywhere around my area. The best they have is FYG: $235 installed. I called four different companies and they all said Pilkington isn't available. The other option is Volvo brand from the dealership, but I imagine it'll cost a fortune. I haven't been able to get a hold of the parts department yet, so I don't know the price.

That is pretty crazy. I went to the fist place that I saw that had a big sign saying "Discount Windshields" and they had Pilkington brand windshields. I didn't even know if they were any good so I asked here and received a resounding yes. The cost to me was less than $150 installed. Score.

I am really surprised that nobody around you handles Pilkington.

I was told that the glass distributed by Pilkington for the 240's is hecho en China now, anyways. I wouldn't sweat it, get what the glass guy you like can get/recommends. I paid $190 installed with the old glass already pulled and cleaned up.
