Dan's 142... b20, Holset.

Do not primer or paint that car, it looks bad ass. I would love to have one that looks like that and go old school with it. put a 2jz in that s**t and some crazy baller wheels. DONE AND DONE!!!

aha! so you're who owns that car. i've seen you driving around hawthorne, and drove by your car on 40somethingth between hawthorne and division. sawheeet ride.

aye- i live right over there...

one day, if the title/registration ever gets sorted... the idea is to paint the car the original yellow... and have a megasquirt ready to go... t3/t04 cossie... few other things that should help it scoot along.
also have a lot of other projects, kids, etc... so who knows when that'll happen.

for now the car is a fun daily driver. i do sweat a bit when i see police or parking enforcement, though... it's gotten a couple hundred $ in parking tickets due to expired tags. good times :)

back from the dead....

clean title in hand, current registration...

oh, and this as a teaser:

about fawking time.
looks AWESOME.
i need something that ghetto.
please dont paint it, make the exhaust quiet and scare the **** outta people

been spending time on savarturbo.se
too many fast b20s, gave me too many ideas...

it's actually getting painted...
and not quiet...
and not as low...
and not as slow...

and definitely not as low-buck anymore. went from being a dirt cheap fun car to a relatively expensive thing that takes space in my garage... but a fast b20 sounds like it'd be cool :)

i suppose "fast" is relative... and likely not the proper use of the word by definition.

top speed doesn't seem like it'll be terribly impressive. i've had 180mph street cars... and pretty damned sure this isn't getting anywhere close to that.

"f'ing quick" is probably better describing what i'm after. assuming the f'ing thing doesn't break too often.

if you want to see a fast b20, check out savarturbo.se, see Jens' "worlds fastest b20" in either his 142 or the Vega that's b20 powered.

no chit mang... i cant wait to see it somewhere other than my garage or driveway...

specs:

MS1v3 hi-res 10g
36-1 on dale's underdrive pulley
mitsubitchi coil on plug
d-jet injectors

stock bottom end (for now)
cometic head gasket gone in favor of an OEM (planning on lots of boost, head gasket = fuse)
stock b20f head
mystery Isky cam that has too much overlap for a turbo

Holset HE351CW
"swede style" turbo adapter from stock manifold
4" downpipe transition to 3" all the way to the back, no muffler
big ass ebay IC (think it's an ebay one, anyway)

gonna use the internal wastegate for now and see how it goes... planning on running an external 'gate sometime in the future because i just don't have confidence that the wee little 'gate in the Holset will be good enough (ported it... but still)
using the Holset wastegate actuator i had on my HY... it can run as low as 18psi. also using the HE's wastegate solenoid with the MegaSquirt controlling it.

basically following the same formula that's popular on savarturbo.se... fresh bottom end, EMS and a ****load of boost. fix what breaks, do it again.
planning on starting with 18psi... go from there.

if/when the bottom end goes i'd like to go with some soooper bitchin' h-beam rods and nice/light/short pistons.

the clutch has about 5k miles on it and sucked ass behind the N/A version of the b20...
sure it's gonna go fast.
thinking about a clutchnet 6 puck.

M40 trans. have an extra when this one blows up. have another extra for when that one gives the ghost.

welded diff. that's been the single best modification to this car so far.

Fun! I'm curious to see if it lasts at all with 18psi, lol. What year is the bottom end? 6 bolt or 8 bolt? Did you use M rods or just whatever it had?

6 bolt crank, stock rods... All 1972 bottom, 72 fi head, 8.7:1.

Thinking ill be pulling a lot of advance back as boost climbs... But should still be fun.

Lots of the swede b20 guys seem to get by flogging the hell out of the same setup. If I'm conservative with the tune, throw lots of gas at it and have a bit of luck....

If it all goes boom, no big loss... Then time for some long H beam rods and short pistons.

The swedes often use M rods that's why they can flog the hell out of it, I'd be somewhat conservative with the stock B20 rods.

i intended to run M rods, but one failed the magnaflux test. E rods it is, for now. i've talked to a couple guys running them with a moderate bit of abuse... of course they're only running them for one season, then seem to rebuild after a couple months :)

this thing isn't my daily driver... i've got other cars/motorcycles... just a toy. if it breaks, it breaks.

i'm planning on staying with the 6 bolt, but long H beams and forged bits are in it's future.
i had a '74 8 bolt block/crank, but the bores are ovaled. got another... same thing. checked out a third... damnit, same thing. every 6 bolt i see looks good. seems that with proper rods/pistons, the 6 bolt is plenty good.

last year i ran the around town for a bit with a t3/t4e with a cosworth hot side.
it was a hoot, but not what i really wanted... wasn't intercooled, was just kinda tossed together.

off came the wee t3, in favor of the Holset... which is f'ing huge in comparison.
where the t3 fit easily under the intake... the Holset required a lot of clearancing with a BFH, lots of moving sheet around.

alternator on the driver's side:
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dtKFrYVeBMw/TfY_7L5Ex_I/AAAAAAAABYQ/aw29Gi8zdyg/s800/IMAG0032.jpg"/>

some weld els, sch 40... the entry angle to the turbo looks much more severe in the photo than it is...
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-edPqK3t4a9Y/TfZCrABBWoI/AAAAAAAABYg/t3afs8Id0kE/s800/IMAG0028.jpg"/>
manifold isn't done... fitting the wastegate flange still, as well as proper brackets to help hold the turbo's mass up. damn thing is heavy...
and yes, i'm still running the stock d-jet cold idle control deal. MS is setup for a stepper, but one thing at a time. the COPs are enough for my brain to figure out, for now :)

VR sensor was hanging out on the passenger side. turbo adapter/exhaust all in the way, so had to move it. as a note, the timing covers seem to be made from an alloy of aluminum and ass. weld like utter crap, i tell you:
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xel442x6KwQ/TfY_7L2s7kI/AAAAAAAABYU/zRsZzJhKvXk/s800/IMAG0033.jpg"/>

turbo oil drain now in the timing cover...

(the fitting that's there isn't the one being used... just had the right thread size/pitch)

tossed the bondo'd deck lid in favor of a straight but funky blue one:

the car is being eaten by a vine. thing grew like 2 feet wider in a few days. it's wrapped around everything on the car... going in the windows, everything.

i so want paint.
have a gallon sitting here, waiting. original yellow... but flat. needs lots of body work, first...

crap photo, but ya get the idea... 3" from downpipe to tail, hugs the floor pretty close. went oval under the crossmembers...
the rear end *almost* touches it under full droop, lots of ground clearance at full bottom.

i gotta work on the quality of my photos...

and.... just soon.... a few pounds of Compomotive FH500 goodness. holy hell these things are light...
