Octane booster

probably not. most octane boosters like you would find in an auto parts store raise octane by almost uselessly small ammounts. many people on this board swear by using toluene to boost octane

Does the Volvo ECU have the capability to take advantage of the higher octane by automatically advancing the spark timing etc.?

Seems like something you would have to have a standalone with a different tune for the higher octane to make worthwhile. Or is it just being used as an added measure of safety when running higher boost levels?

unless your seriously abusing your turbo motor, they generally dont ping and dont retard timing beyond the base setting. the ECU will never arbitrarily add timing.

so no, the ECU cant directly take advantage. but you can turn your boost up to murderous levels if you want. your resuls may vary.

Toluene is cheaper by volume - and often more effective to boot. Used it on a dyno demonstration car once when we forgot to bring a fan for its intercooler.

wasn't there a video not too long ago testing a whole bunch of octane boosters on a new audi, and they all decresed performance of the car?

This.

A bottle of over-the-counter Octane Booster says it can boost your octane "up to 9 points." If you read the fine print, 1 point = 0.1 points of octane.

So based off 87 octane, a bottle of SUPER HARDCORE RACING OCTANE BOOSTER will get you a whopping 87.9 octane.

Toluene is a different beast. It has an octane rating of 114, and can be safely mixed up to a 30% ratio. On top of 91 octane, that means I can mix it to over 96 octane.

This makes a very noticeable difference. It allows your ECU to add an assload of ignition timing, and it allows you to run more bewst.

Toluene is "baby race gas."

True race gas DOES add horsepower. Any comparison on a dyno proves that.
