I've got a '92 240 currently on R134a with a '93 parallel flow condenser and the OE pusher fan on a manual switch. Did a whole lot of work to flush, replace the o-rings, vacuum for hours and whatnot last year, however I don't believe that I bled the air out of my charge hose when I filled the system with R134a so a little air might've gotten in there, oops. Also I had an issue with my orifice tube at one point so I had to open the system and didn't replace the drier, the system wasn't open long (couple hours maybe) but that could have had an impact.
It got me through last summer in Virginia comfortably, never checked vent temps. Now I'm going to be going on a trip out west to Texas, Arizona, California etc where it'll be hotter than this AC has seen so of course I'm second guessing everything.
Yesterday it was about 75 ambient here and I checked my vent temps and saw ~47, which doesn't seem great, especially when reading what other people are getting. Now I do feel as though it might hold that 47 to higher ambient temps because a couple of weeks ago I was in 85-90 ambient and was able to be comfortable in the AC.
Being who I am, I always want more. I've seen a number of you have good success with Duracool instead of R134a and I was wondering if anyone had any feedback aimed at my specific scenario?
The way I see it I have three options:
1. I do nothing and just hope that my current set up is up to the task of the west and risk pissing off my 3 passengers when we start getting sweaty.
2. I get the R134a evacuated, put in a new drier, revacuum the system, be extra careful about bleeding the charge line etc, charge with R134a, and risk spending that money and getting right back where I am. (also potentially installing a variable orifice)
3. I get the R134a evacuated, new drier yada yada, charge with Duracool, hoopefully get better AC performance?
The only thing that kind of skeeves me out about the Duracool is just the fact that I put a new compressor on last year which was not cheap and I'd hate for the Duracool to do something whack to it.
I do really like the idea that I can just evacuate the Duracool myself and pipe it into my intake or something should I ever want to open my AC system. I'm the only one working on the car and I have had to pay to have a shop evacuate the R134a a few times because I forgot/screwed up silly things.
