BMW E36 T5 (holset content)

Hello guys, been a long time since i got a chance to actually build something volvo related.

Been trying to get back to whiteblocks for 5 years and now finally managed to do that:-D

What started out as a simple naturally aspirated 5 cylinder swap to my "daily-beater", so i could have a little fun with it, has come to a point, where when i get what i want from the engine, i'm going to swap it to a proper chassy for drag use :-P

So to make long story a little shorter - here's my beemer 5 years ago:

Meanwhile, it has had several engines, starting with 1.8 83kw stock engine, then 3.0 v8 engine, then again 1.8 engine that ran on 2,5bar of boost, then 2.0 6 cylinder with turbo and finally what the thread is about - whiteblock.

So about the "thing" itself - Regular e36 body, minor mods in the front suspension, mostly everything rebuilt few years ago. So far i've used it for dragracing and also drifting as my own entertainment.

Sad part is.. my best ET so far is 13,625@162kmh with my 1.8 engine and 0,9bar of boost, so i haven't succeeded much:lol:
But this year not should, but WILL be different:oogle:

So the engine.. i started the swap with B5254S from my old volvo 440, got to drive it just a little around garage when its life got ended due to oiling error.
That sorted out.. new life on the chassy started b5204T engine i picked up. Looked for specifically 2.0 due to 81mm cylinder, so it would handle more power:cool:

Engine: B5204T
ECU: Megasquirt 3v3.0
Turbo: Holset HX50
Wastegate: from Audi AAN
Injectors: Siemens deka 825cc
Fuel pump: Walbro 450lph
FPR: Turbosmart
Clutch: stock diesel one for now :cool:
Gearbox: Getrag 240

Those are specs for the first dyno.. also boost will be 0,7bar as base, because i don't want to kill the engine so quickly with my need for power:)

For drag season, i have forged rods, crank from D5 engine waiting, and also plan for better clutch and double-VVT(for now just exhaust cam).


I think i have covered most of the important parts of this build, so hope you liked it and if anything is bothering, i'm always listening to what everyone has to say (i'm mostly not that way that people suggest but that's not the point) :-D
 
Yeah i used the stock fwd oil pan.. thought about finding the rwd oil pan but as i do everything myself, it was basically 0 expense on modifying it to fit :)

Gearbox is also welded, but i got it from a friend because 5th gear is making noise and he made himself new one.. also i was too lazy to make myself one, because it was supposed to be a fast and easy project :-D
 
What oil pan did you start with? Did it have the oil cooler/warmer on the side of the pan?
 
Oil pan is from 5cyl fwd car and yes it had oil cooler lines but in front of the pan not side. Side ones wouldn't probably work for me.
As you see i used them for remote oil filter, but that is not needed in every case, original filter mount works fine if there's enough room for it :)

So i finally pulled myself together, and went to dyno... 5th time with this car... best result so far:rofl:

But to stop your exitement, didn't go there to pull big power because i still have stock internals and i want it to stay running just a bit :D
Main thing was to see if everything works properly.. and gladly it basically does.
Oil catch system i think needs some improvement but everything else was just dandy.

So it has 9psi of boost at the moment and 222hp/256nm at the wheels.

Thinking back i could've turned up the boost just a bit.. regrets:lol:
 
So finally i did some fixes and went back to dyno..

The result is 340hp/378nm at the wheels so about 360hp/400nm from engine at 20psi of boost :-D
Not bad for stock 2 litre whiteblock..

Next step is new exhaust header because me and my tuner are pretty convinced that it doesn't flow and causes detonation.. because at max hp i only have 2 degrees of ignition advance and lots of fuel to avoid knocking :rofl:
 
Nice work so far!!

What are you doing with the VVT solenoid? Are you controlling the cam timing they the ECU or is it left uncontrolled?
 
M52 i had but i don't like the sound of them and also kinda boring engines as probably every imaginable build has been done with them.. i mean small turbos, big turbos, multiple turbos, all kinds of chassies etc.
Yeah they might be good.. as are 2jz, ls and other highly mainstream engines but i never seem to choose the easy way :D
I like experimenting and doing things nobody usually does.

What comes to VVT then it is controlled by ecu. It is a very good thing, especially what comes to small displacement-big turbo combination :D
When i finally have the time to rebuild the engine i'm gonna add the intake vvt also :)
