Question 245 Straight Pipe Options

Thinking about it. Can someone post some pics, if theyve ever done it? Also tell me about the process, and specs on it.
I'm wanting some more noise coming out the back!

Thanks,
Rob

I had straight through on my 86DL for a few weeks. it sounded like a rally car, probably wasn't good for the head though. I think I remember something about n/a engines needing back pressure?

it'll be all noise and no go....really embarrasing when your auto downshifts to go up a grade...more noise and still going the same speed.....

why do you need a picture? it would be basicly the same as what you have now except all the piping would be the same diameter...replace large muffler(s) with straight tubing...make sure you have your registration handy for when the LE pulls you over

Just remove the rear muffler. Run straight piping out the right rear backside and use a metal strip exhaust hanger to hang it on one of the old mounts for the rear muffler. That's what I did and I love how it sounds.

Honestly, it's an N/A b230f. You won't notice any difference with less backpressure.

There's not really any process involved. Remove mufflers, replace with pipe.

This is a myth, perpetuated by the same people who say that you cannot turbocharge an N/A engine. It's surprisingly widespread, apparently there are more people who have no idea of physics out there than I thought.

Summary: YOU DO NOT NEED BACKPRESSURE - BACKPRESSURE IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT

We could go into scavenging and exhaust flow here, but it's been covered.

Default straight pipe

I ran no muffler on my 240 turbo long ago. It sounded terrible. Then I ran a glass pack and didn't like that either. I settled on a 2.5" crush bent exhaust with a 2.5" dynomax ultra flow muffler in the rear location. Sounded good and seemed to run better.

yep, there is no such thing as backpressure, what you need is the one exhaust pulss to draw the next one along. If you go for to large of a pipe on na, the pulse doesn't create enough low pressure behind it to draw the next pulse along. It works more or less on the same consept as the airbrush does. The moving gas draws air from the other tube. But the gas is the exhaust pulse and the orher tube is the other silinder port. Uuuh....at least thats what I think . can be wrong.

Keep the cat (if you have emissions testing) and put on the Flowmaster and run pipe straight out the back. I did this on my '82 (even with a megaphone tip) and it sounded great! Getting rid of the resonator and huge f-in muffler really helps.
On my current wagon, I have a flowmaster 1-in/2-out with duals out the back. It is, surprisingly, too quiet still....

A decent exhaust shop should be able to knock this out for you cheap and quick since they don't have to bend a pipe over the axle....

Sounds like a boat if NA, a tractor if turbo.

If you drive it daily you will grow tired of it fast. I had a glasspack and dual outlets. Cut it all off for something as quiet as stock. Loud sucks when you're slow.

And if you ever get on the highway, forget it. The drone will drive you insane.

n/a .......really loud and sounds horrible. Unless you're at full throttle and high RPM, then it's so loud you can't tell if it sounds good or not.

Last winter I hit a pothole and my exhaust separated right at the end of the down pipe. That was the worst sound ever.

I put a 2.5" straight-through exhaust on my old 245 Turbo (pre-TB). It was loud and horrible, but honestly, I loved it. Looked a lot like MikeJr's pic up there, but welded directly to the stock cat and sans muffler. Car was never reliable enough to hit the highway...hell I was glad whenever it started up.

woah!
side exit!
Thats awesome
I think that im probably gonna remove the muffler and replace it with a straight pipe
i wanna see how that sounds for while, and if i like it-it stays, if i grow sick of it like many of you said, ill probably ditch that
but keep in mind, within the next year, i hope to +T my B230F.
I think the car sounds to quiet now

I broke the pipe that goes between the first and second muffler on my car. Sounds pretty good, ESPECIALLY when the exhaust is cold (o2 sonsor) and sounds better than any glasspack I've ever heard. . .
