Default 415HP will the Dana 30 Hold Up?

I am dropping a modified Ford 302 V8 in my DL wagon but not so sure the Dana 30 will hold up.
Has anyone done a V8 swap and has had success with the stock rear diff? Anyone modify their Dana 30 and what parts did you use?

if you weld it it might. Stock? no way in hell. it'll blow up probably the first time you put the heat to it.

Stock...no
But the 30 has alot of be tough parts available for it,
the Jeep guys build the bejusus out of these things.

the trick is figuring out which will fit this specific 30

I found some parts to beef up the Dana but they are expensive. Has anyone changed the rear for a Ford 8 3/4 or 9" unit?

It's a 347 stroker motor with Dart aluminum heads. I would have gone to a milder engine except I had this one all ready to go into another car when those plans were put on hold.

I want to set-up the wagon to run at my local 1/8 mile track but still drive it around the streets.

My car would never leave the line. Plus they use VHT traction compound on the track so when it does finally hook, it will hook hard.

He likes how big it is and how it is so shiny.

Big torque + traction will break axles if you weld it up.

In a 240 you will also tear up the torque rods in rear suspension when it hooks up. The car will suddenly be a real handful when you break a torque rod or an axle.

The Detroit True-Trac lasted the longest of any limited slip device I tried.

I've never broken a ring and pinion, but have broken many axles. Always in the splines right at the carrier. You will need a long strong magnet to fish out the stub.

For drag racing it's all about shock loading. I built a Ford 8.8 traction lock diff that held up to an 1100 Hp monster 351W (we built that too.) Everything was "stock" in that diff, just measured to a rats ass (and hammered into place.) Would it hold up to continuous use (real road racing) hell no it would fail in a few minutes of real abuse. I bet it would be fine on the street.

ya any shock on the stock axles with traction and they go by by. Hell i just got done replacing the 3rd ford 8.8 in the mustang that is out back and it's only got 490 FT / Lbs of torque, it's the slicks that are killing them. But I don't think the 9 inch that's going in now will break. And once the dana 30 in the volvo breaks i've got a built 9 inch that will never break to go in there.

Be sure to use 35 spline axles. Gun drill them to reduce weight. They will still be plenty strong.

He used to go to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. I saw his car at a GTG in Richmond a few years ago and IIRC he was running a Dana 30 with an open differential.

I'm swapping in a mildly modified 302 into my 88' 745, I was told not to do burnouts everywhere I went because the spider gear would be the first to go, get a LSD for a Dana 30 and it will last forever (for all reasonable purposes) I've heard of a guy who welded his Dana in a 240 that has it as a dedicated drag car and does pretty well with it I'm told. I'd say depends on whether your going to drive this car on the street or strip. I plan on getting an LSD for mine as soon as cash flow permits...

The real question is, if you are going to the effort and expense of building a "415hp" Volvo- how much extra effort is it to swap in a diff with some real testicles and maybe even a clutch type diff?

Answer: Basically zero effort. I have done the 8.8 swap and it is pretty straightforward.
