Believe it was the gle that had the 16 valve option

Not normally, why do you wonder?
In Sweden there are some old police cars that are ordinary GL but with 234F engines.

GL is not a 16v only the GLE, I had an 89 744 GLE with a 16valve and an M-46

I was working on a friends 89 744GL today. It's an 8V car. That's all you could get.

Ported 90+.True Track diff. Flat hood 1979 front grill Ecode park/turn lights with H4 Hella. 321k miles. Had it since 1995. 1993 245 Classic, 340k miles, enem V15. Genuine Volvo stock over the axle exhaust. |

GLE is the only model that came with a 16v. if it had a gl badge on the back, someone swapped badges.
GL was the base model 740.

The 740 GLT also came with the B234F as standard, but I don't think those were sold in the U.S.
