Default Best score so far!!!!! TD04HL-16T!!!!!! It's ALIVE!!!!!!!

Went to the junkyard today to get a turbo. The 12B I had shat the bed last week, so I started thinking towards a 15G. Went online and found that Strandbergs had a few. Headed over there this morning, and I told them that I needed a turbo for a 1995 850 turbo. Off we go, and find a turbo on the shelf, a 15G in good shape, when we come back, there was something wrong with the tag on the turbo, it was supposed to be for a '96 or something. So we head back into their warehouse, find another one on the shelf, and when I read the tag, I started drooling, and my eyes lit up.....1995 850 T5R!!!! I look at the compressor, and it reads; TD04HL-16T!!!! Yeeeeehahhhhhh!!! Score!!!!! Same price as the 15G, do I complain??? NO!!! I walked away with a big smile on my face.

I know the 16T comes on a bit later, but then it also pulls a lot harder towards the top end. Looking at the compressor maps, there is a slight difference. But I'll know in a few days how it reacts once installed. I'm stoked!!!!!!

Thumbs up

thats a nice find, you should concidder porting the turbine housing and the manifold while you are doing the swap.

The td04h has a very restrictive exhaust inlet, and reacts well to porting. Same with the wastegate

Stealthfti (thanks again Stealthfti, those pics are helpfull) did a really good job documenting the porting process, http://www.pbase.com/stealthfti/miscellany that will definatly help the turbo not run our of puff, and improve the longivety of the manifold.

Good find, now make it better!
(in case you need to be reminded how small the exhaust turbines are on the td04 ( http://www.unce.org/volvo/referance/...mparison01.JPG ) anyporting you do will be a big help.

The only negative thing I have found so far is the fact that the compressor housing doesn't have mounting points for the wastegate that allows you to rotate the housing. There's only one spot for it. So I think I will route the piping to the IC under the turbo, past the powersteering pump and back up.

I opened up the port on the manifold last night, and I'll look at the turbine tonight.

All US R's and T5-R's had 15g's not 16t's. European ones had 16t's, and S70's had 16t's, but no American R/T5-R had a 16t.

so would a 99' S70 T5 with a manual tranny have a 16t?

Interesting......Well, the tag read 850R, so unless they messed up I don't know. Then what car in 1995 had the 16T?? The good thing is I got a turbo, hopefully I'll have it all installed and running in a day or 2. I've been working waaaay too much lately, haven't really had much time left for my cars.

Here's some info I found today........

Garett TB2543 740/940
Mitsubishi TD04-13c 740/940 ft
Mitsubishi TD04-15G 850, T5
Mitsubishi TD04-16T 850 R & 70/S60 T5
Mitsubishi TD04-18T newer 850R 70 R
Mitsubishi TD04-19T X70 AWD R (2000)
KKK K24 (300 hk) V70/S60 AWD R

S70T5M's have 16T's in the US I believe.

None that I know of, but I'll check to make sure.

Yeah exactly, I know what you mean.

That doesn't apply to US cars I believe. US 850T5's, turbo's, R's and T5-R's all had 15g's here. I thought otherwise also, but poking around on cars and later on my own 850R resulted in other information.
The S70R was not available in the US. The V70R had an 18t, except for the later V70R's had 19t's. And yes the new R's have the KKK K24.

All this information is to the best of my knowledge, but I'm pretty sure about it. I'll check up on all of it, but this is what research has shown so far.

It's on. I got it on this morning. One of the big advantages is the size of the exhaust outlet on the turbine. The difference is significant. I had to go and get a larger 3 inch collector adapter, and cut the end flange and about 1 inch off my downpipe. I've welded on the new, larger flange. The difference is about 1/2 inch over the stock turbo. Hopefully tonight I'll be able to finish the IC tubing. Maybe even a test run tomorrow!!!!!!!

Default My baby is back on the road!!!!

She purrs like a kitten. Idle is a bit lopey, but that's because of the cam. Went out today, did a few longer runs, boosting about 10 pounds, and the conclusion is; it was well worth it!!!! Very smooth, pulls hard all the way to the redline. The routing of the IC pipes worked out very well. I ran it straight down from the turbo, used the old aluminum bend to brig it straight forward, then the old S bend hose I cut it in half, and used the first section to bring it up, and from there I used a piece of aluminum pipe, and attached that to the other half of the S bend and into the IC. I'll try to get some pics up on a PBASE account or something this weekend.

Not sure when they started using the 16T's on the Gen I V70R's, but mine had a 16T from the factory.
