I purchased this particular 90 740SE from a former co-worker knowing some of the background as it has belonged to a few Brickers already. I first knew of the car when Justin (Blu92in99) purchased it from Renny. As far as I can figure, Renny had bought it from the Poi/Pennybridge camp. I know Justin's work well and jumped at the chance to buy a car he had "gone through" even if it was 4 1/2 years previous. Justin had sold the car to said co-worker for a fair price for it's condition at the time, we'll just say a few grand. The car was bought by the co-worker for his kid. As is the case many times, the son was not impressed with a Volvo of any kind and did what he could to shorten it's lifespan. After about a year and a half the bottom end gave out due to oil starvation, go figure. It spent the next three years sitting in his driveway.

Skipping to the purchase,
The new owner made it known to the other Volvo people he worked with the car could be had for $500. Knowing some of the issues it had and being the cheap a$$es we are we tried to get it for less but he would not budge. Possibly because he bought it for a few grand years before from one of us. Trolling the Craig's list ads, we came across the SE listed incorrectly, as an 89 740 or something for $400. Another board member got in touch and talked to the owner who quickly dropped his asking price to $300. I ended up having it towed home and now had about $400 into it. Time for the assesment!

How was it?
The bottom end was toast. It would spin 3/4 of a turn in either direction and then make a loud metalic clunk and stop. The rest of the car had not faired well either. Any work that had been done to the car in the past 4 years had been half assed or done wrong. Bolts in were the wrong places, there were wood screws holding the gas door on, it had a pre-90 green bumper due to dragging the SE front bumper, the front lug nuts were on backwards and several other things of that caliber repair. I made a list, a loooong list, so much for any work Justin had done.

The repairs,
First thing was to make it run. Always wanting to do a +T but living in Cali and not wanting to piss off the DMV, I decided to use a low milage NA block from my brother's wrecked 91 740 in a turbo car even though I had a B230FT on my engine stand. We dropped the oil pan and drilled the stock turbo oil return boss to the stock diameter the resealed all of the external gaskets and replaced all the seals.

</a>
After the motor was installed the go fast goodies from the previous 7 went on.
We swapped in the VX3 cam,

</a> <a href=http://mail.dirmkt.com/steve/images/cam02.jpg target=_blank>
cam02_tn.jpg
</a>
the ported 90+ plus exhaust manifold, a clocked 15G turbo with the stock drain tube and not wanting to drill into an oil passage, we used the fitting on the front of the block for the feed.
<a href=http://mail.dirmkt.com/steve/images/15G_bracket.jpg target=_blank>
15G_bracket_tn.jpg
</a>

Adding the 3" downpipe we fabbed up the over axle full 3" exhaust with one high flow cat and one straight through muffler in the rear position keeping the entire exhaust tucked as close to the body as possible.

We mounted up the IPD sway bars and the IPD springs with our lower perch mod,

new stay rod bushings and stainless brake lines. While replacing all of the vaccuum lines we added the manual boost controller. With fresh fluids and a little more maintenance it was ready to drive.

First road test,
The car ran incredibly fast. The boost hit almost instantly, hit hard and stayed 'till MBC cut. Unfortunatly, due to the high compression and stock ECU's it had some serious pinging in certain spots under certain loads but watching the boost gauge and keeping it under 12 psi or so at rpm kept it from sounding like rocks in a cofee can. It was also obvious one tire was not going to be enough to get this power to the ground.

Time to upgrade,
The first round of upgrades after the initial build included mostly gauges, A/F, boost, temp etc. I removed the coin tray and lighter and made a tripple gauge DIN to hold them as well as a two gauge pillar pod.

I swapped in a cleaner set of tail-lights to replaced the badly hazed ones it currently had.

Talking to friends I found Keith (KRG1971) had a G-80 ASD with a 4.10 ring and pinion so it was atained for some swapped out parts. The case was opened and modded to eliminate the 25mph lockout,<br>

the seals were replaced and all of the stock rubber bushings were filled and stiffened with eurothane as well as the mounting perch pads.

Somewhere in this time range the sound system was upgraded to a Blaupunkt Monte Carlo head unit with a cheap 340Watt amp with a custom built box and two 10" speakers.
Nothing extreme but enough to feel the bass on the heavy notes.

So far so good,
At around this point the car was running around a 14.5 @ 98.8. Then came the first power related (kinda) failure, the AW-71. The trans was never really that good to start with. the fluid was kinda dark and had a slight shimmer to it. Within 3100 miles the trans developed a late one two shift under anything except full throttle when it was supposed to shift late. The same wrecked donor car gave up it's trans in a pinch. Unfortunately, the donor trans was a weak AW-72-L that didn't make it two weeks. A low milage later model AW-71 was picked up for around $100 at the local pick and pull with nice bright pink non smelly fluid. Before it ever got installed, the accumulator mod was done to help it last a bit longer and handle the extra power without exploding.

</a>
With the new trans and a bunch of other stage 0 stuff it ran a best of 14.08 @ 99.8.

I started installing one of my nitrous kits a peice at a time but had no plans on running it yet. I spent a good amount of time making sure none of it was visable. Last run at the drags, the tech inspector didn't notice the lines, solenoids, covered gauges or injector sprayer screwed into the intake, so, mission accomplished!

Still more upgrades,
In the next round and over the next few weeks more upgrades were done chasing the 13's and a sleeker appearance. Two heat range cooler plugs cut the ping down to reasonable enough levels for the stock ECU to handle though it still doesn't like anything but premium gas. The trans cross-member was swapped out for a 760 type so a poly puck mount could be used in place of the stock rubber square mount.
<a href=http://mail.dirmkt.com/steve/images/trans_mount.jpg target=_blank>
trans_mount_tn.jpg
</a>

The next plan was to swap the intake and cooling system setup from a 92+. A local yard had two late models that both donated their best parts to swap over the radiator, intercooler, condensor, IC piping, cooling hoses, AC lines, trans cooler lines, ECU, water over oil coller and the electric fan setup with relay. The pins were added to the ECU connector to run the E-fan setup and the swap was complete. This is a very involed swap but very woth it.

Somewhere along the lines on a parts run to a local yard we stumbled across a full set of body colored door handles and mirrors and couple of fellow brickers I was with (JH_Cali and Blu92in99) bought them for me as a birthday gift. A few more tweaks and tunes, some cosmetic improvements and removing a bit of extra weight from the trunk (tire chains, two gallons of water, the SECOND set of jumper cables and a huge 4-way lug wrench), leaving the speaker box and all of the needed road tools for minor repairs or a flat, the car finally broke into the 13's with a best of 13.962 @ 100.5 1/4 mile in full street trim including my work thermos, notebook and cooler in the back seat. I drive the car to and from work every day and never treat it nicely. So far it is reliable, doesn't break parts, runs like a race car and handles better than a 740 should be allowed, almost completely with Volvo parts!!! The next couple of rounds will be more maintenance and cosmetic related though I still have to fine tune a few more things like dropping a few degrees of timing at full throttle through ECU pins switched by WOT switch and add in a trans cooler. I do have plans to finish the nitrous but will only run about a 25hp shot rather than the ridiculous amounts I am used to pushing through my NA motors. More as it happens, Stay tuned, literally!!!

NEW UPDATE:
After adding the browntop injectors at an earlier stage, I had picked up the 3" MAF and the attaching piping. Sticking to the "stock look is better" theroy I set out to not attract attention.

Shortly after the 3" MAF was installed I got tired of missing clips on my airbox and gutted out an LH2.2 airbox that had all of it's clips. This airbox came out my wrecked 760. The hot air tube cap in the top of the second pic was pulled from the LH2.4 airbox.

Added from later posts, more updates:
Swapped out all of the instrument lighting with red bulbs including the pillar pod boost gauge. Really hard to get pictures of but I absolutely love the look. The second pic is my center stack with the DIN gauges replacing the change cubby/lighter, the seat heater switches can be seen easily but the pick doesn't show how well the shifter looks.

Re-Update 9/5/10:
Did a bunch of interior cleaning up and color swapping.
Stock, the SE has a gray interior with a few black parts like the speaker grills and mirror block off plates as well as the dash being half and half. So I used the carpeted black door pockets, black side window defroster vent, black window switch trim, black door pulls, black lock knobs and trims, black speaker grills and mirror inside trim on gray door panels. I really like the look so far.

</a> <a href=http://mail.dirmkt.com/steve/images/interior_trim03.jpg target=_blank>

</a>

I changed out the entire rear window shelf as well, replacing the light gray shelf trim with the dark gray shelf trim as well as the metal cased speakers and black D pillar seat belt trim (with gray opening trim), black seat belt reel covers, black third brake light cover. This required removing the 3 seat belt anchors bolted to the shelf and mounting the 760 deck stantions as well as the sound deadening mat.

I started the seat swap today pulling the gray leather seats and headrests with some split seems for a gray cloth set. I swapped in the rear headrests, center arm rest as well as the top and bottom seat halves. Much more comfy in the rear, for the rear.

9/14/2010:
Swapped the back half of the console out this past weekend. Interesting how much some of the small stuff changes. The late model rear ashtray will not fit in a console with an early model cubby. The back of the cubby is shaped differently to allow for the later ashtray.

Finally swapped in the front gray cloth seats and some black seat trim as well. The driver's side is now power.

I also talked the wife into letting me swap the hydras from the SE for the multi's.

UPDATE 6-10-2011
The newer low milage trans stood up to over 8 months of constant beating before second gear went loose. Drive it like you stole it!!!

I <3 this car. This car was the one that sold me on Volvo 7/9 series as being decent platforms, especially as comfy DDs. Being able to rip 13s at the strip after a long day of work, on stock Volvo parts...that's just icing on the cake right there. :zeeall:

Linked some of the thumbnails to larger pics...
Working on mini write-ups for some of the mods.

This weekend I took a car with a black interior (the mine again due to crash 760) and swapped out the door pulls, the window switch trim, the upper grab handles and lock knobs with the black ones and like the look so far. I'll try to get some pictures up soon.
I also talked the wife into letting me swap the hydras from the SE for the multi's that are on the 960 now, just gotta buy her new tires :-(

Probably no more drag runs until the nitrous is finished. :oogle:

I hope the NOS goes in soon....

I would like to have another Volvo at the Strip. Even though you'll blow me off the line (especially if we haven't added the 3" exhaust to wagon).

OK, the best time recorded was 16 flat but I have never dragged before, had an hour wait between runs, and didn't think to lower my dial in with the drop in temp and a cold engine. Plus beyond it being a fully trimmed wagon with the third seat and everything I am a fat bastard and am responsible for at least .2 seconds on my own :rofl: The things one learns. I am sure if I hadn't busted out on my first competition run I would have gotten into the high 15's. As always a shot out to my Volvo Racing Team Steve O and blu92in99's with a shout out to krg1971 for keeping my moral up.

It will be nice to have a fellow Volvo enthusiast out making people in the stands say "That's a Volvo!?!?!?!"

It was great to watch you run.
I'm working on the 3" downpipe now. :cool: we need to pick up some more pipe.
With everything else you've done it'll really uncork it!

Bought the wife her tires and swapped the multi's on to the SE.

Swapped out all of the instrument lighting with red bulbs including the pillar pod boost gauge. Really hard to get pictures of...
