Default Scott's '81 242 project

The Background:
About a year ago i was at work, and one of our customers brought his 85 244 turbo in to be worked on, basically long story short my boss told him it needed a fuel dist, and a engine harness to get it to run correctly, on top of that it needed all brakes, and some other odds and ins. The customer decided he didnt want to fix the car, and asked if anyone would want it. I decided that i would get it and fix it up a little, and drive it around some. so i did some work to the car, built a harness for the engine, and did a waterpump and some other stuff to the car. then i got a girlfriend and it was super hot outside so lost all interest in doing anything with the car for awhile. then me and my girl parted ways, and i got accepted to VCU, so once again i couldnt really work on the car. I spend alot of my spare time at school surfing turbobricks and decided its time to start doing work on this thing. Winter break rolls around and i sell off a few things to get Megasquirt and a wideband. i was fed up with the kjet system not wanting to start cold(to find out recently that all it needs is a thermo time switch). So i gather all the parts to do the kjet to MS swap and was about ready start on it when i came across a 242 shell for the right price. I had always wanted a 242 so i picked it up. Unfortunately i got it a week before school started back up and didnt have much time to get to do alot of work on it
The 244

The 244 with the 242 chillin in the background. Will be like this until march when i can get some more work done to it.

The first part of the build:
Unfortunately i forgot to get a camera from my house before we started, so my half decent cell phone pics will have to do.
Car on the trailer about to head to the shop

Engine compartment shot before work

Engine compartment with everything removed and after a nice cleaning

Drivers side and passenger side butt cheeks, removed that heavy rock hard sheet of stuff from most of the trunk. going to cut butt cheeks off and repair what rust has eaten away.

Blew up the Heater Core so this

turned to this

Also did a full A/C delete, and most of the wires are going to be weeded out, only going to have the heat settings to pass inspection, and keep me warm in the winter.

Got engine compartment ready to weld, all seams and holes will be welded

Side shots waiting for trim delete

Back seat making a nice storage area

Pulled the gastank to find out it had a rusty inside. Either going to do the acid and epoxy trick, or going fuel cell

Got a 530 head for P&P, and planning on putting bigger valves, and a better cam in also

One of my many box of goodies

95 C4 Corvette seats that might be mounted in the car

In for a cool build.

I'd do a 3" exhaust. No question.

Awesome start, we seem like we are at similar stages of our respective builds.

thanks man, i am really excited about the build, i grew up around volvos, and just cant seem to get away. cant wait until spring break to do more work. 3in exhaust is the plan now, cant decide if i want to do a 3in downpipe, then a boost activated cutout type thing, then 2.5in exhaust after that for a stockish look, this will most likely not happen due to police might not like it too much and i would be too tempted to make it open going down the road.
kinda like this

nice man, Im hoping ill get the car ready for the engine swap over my spring break, things such as getting the wiring harness straightened out and getting the engine compartment and trim holes all welded up and painted. i got 3 more weeks

i peeled back the rebuild sticker, and it said it was a hx35w. would be pretty sweet if it was a hx40 tho. billy at knox said it has like 250 miles on it since the rebuild which was done by the factory in 2004.

im hoping to order a rsi stage 2 cam while theyre still on sale. i might even spring for the stage 3.

Didn't really get what i hoped to accomplish over spring break. I got my RSI stage II cam, and adj. cam gear in the mail, got all my parts for my manual swap, flat hood+single round setup, and picked out the color for the car when it is complete. did a spray out on the valve cover i will be using.

heres a cell phone picture of what it looks like...which does absolutely no justice to the paint. looks beautiful in the sunlight. I'm planning on painting the letters black at some point.

Good news, I got a free 94 b230ft that's in pretty good shape, and I got my 530 head pulled all apart for a port and polish job prior to taking it to knox motorsports for 46/38mm valves, and some good valve springs.

Bad news, tomorrows the rapture/doomsday/end of the world, and I haven't really been taking awhole lot of pictures to keep you updated. But if tomorrow is a hoax I will take some pix for good measure

The torando belongs to a friend of a friend, it was waiting to be painted. My best friends father, practically my 2nd dad, is into classic car restoration, so they have quite a few classics floating around.

Updates from today/this weekend:
My b230ft had a blown HG, Head is warped, but i believe the block is fine, i need to clean up the gasket surface and use a straight edge to make sure the block isn't warped. Got it just about stripped down to a shortblock and started the block cleaning process, while making a huge mess on the floor at work.

Since finding the b230ft and getting another old parts car, ive decided to keep the 244tic together and im going to sell it to a friend of mine as his first car. Got some work ahead of him ...most likely lh2.4 swap

On another note 242 is being trailered out to the shop on Friday, first on the agenda is getting the engine compartment in check, then getting the brakes working.

got a couple pictures, but id like to get a few more before i start posting them up.

Did some work yesterday. Pulled pretty much the entire brake system out of a junker, minus the front calipers, they were the solid style rotors. cut the quarter panels out of the same car to use to repair my rusty lower quarters. Got quite a collection of parts, just need to start putting it all together now...

B230FT been working on getting it all cleaned up, I will most likely throw in some new rings while i have it all apart. Not sure what color to paint the block yet...Maybe red

SQUIRTERS

What happens when I get done pulling some quarter panels

Quarters and Fender

90+ Manifold has a few cracks, Will be ported, welded, and milled flat for holset until i can get a tubular header made

530 head valves pulled out

Exhaust side, i was amazed at how much could be ground out till the gasket matches. Will be porting soon

Not so much to be ground out on the intake side

RSI goodies

Fake HKS SSQV, I have a real HKS its at a friends place waiting to pick it all up. and 5 inch coilover sleeves, for the front or rear, haven't decided yet

Busted up knuckle up pretty good. I need to start wearing gloves again and get a tan...

Well speaking of a tan, I got a super bad sunburn and it has been entirely too hot to work on the car. Been about 98*F here the past few days. I did get the car out to the shop Friday. Next things on the lists are weld up the 90+ manifold cracks, clean the headgasket surface on the b230 to see if it needs to be decked or not, and start putting the brake lines on the car. I need to get my argon tank and welding wire out to the shop so i can start welding the engine compartment and trim holes up.
