How to ID which ZF power steering I have? 240

I have a Cam rack on my 81 240 with the diamond shape plates , do you have these plates or press fit covers , on your rack ? these plates and press fit covers is how I differentiate between ZF and CAM . Thes ZF will have these round press fit covers on them ...... opps I forgot ZF racks will have ZF letters in the casting of the rack body .....

I "think" the rack came from an '80 240, the place below shows 3 different ZF racks.
Type I, II and III

Thanks

from my Jan 1994 "Quick Reference Parts Catalogue" there *are*
three ZF units listed *and* the kits "from Volvo" that match

ZF rack marked 1229394 ................ gets kit # 1272537-0
ZF rack marked 1272984 or 1329694 gets kit # 1273576-7
ZF rack marked 1329694 ................ gets kit # 271562-1

and *yes* I *know* there is a "cross over" between the second and third
racks that will require a discussion w/the "parts guy" at your supplier (he
*should provide* the discriminator ) for you to get the correct kit...

too bad you don't have the "hulk" to refer to...the *BUILD PLATE* has that
info on it! which in THIS PARTICULAR CASE is *IRRELEVANT* because
it only identifies the MAKE by number and *not* the TYPE of ZF rack!
the "production date" may also guide you w/clues...buuuut.....
yer gonna have to go w/what you can find on the rack itself...

my VADIS reference is not on site yet so I'm going "old school" here
there *might be* someone lurking that has the PARTS FISCHE that
may have more info but IIRC you *always end up AT THE RACK*
looking for numbers... :-(

thanks...I contacted the seller of the kits as well...rack has ZF cast into it, it sitting on my work bench, getting more number or info from it will not be a problem...the donor 242 got crushed a few years ago, so no help there.

Donor vehicle likely had the rack replaced during it's life too.

Hey years ago JVL sourced rack and pinion gears for the rare ZF rack for my rallycar. He sent them off to a rebuilder who rebuilt the rack using those gears.....

2.5 turns lock to lock is a wonderful thing & the rack has been trouble free.

I have a Type I , figures, most expensive rebuild kit :(

Found some information out from the kit manufacture...they just updated their website to help people like me out :)

Type 1 = 7840955103 on tag
Type 3 = 7832955106 on tag
