Default 242 Engine Swap Opinions

So I purchased my 242 with an engine/trans swap in mind, LSX or 5.0, I love the car's styling (or lack there of). Months before this purchase I bought a 1995 M3 coupe automatic with the same intentions but the body wasn't up to par so I sold it. At the same time I bought a 1993 325i manual that had been hit in the rear for a song.

I still have the 325i with it's complete 2.5 L M50B25 and 5 speed manual sitting around.......worth swapping into the 242?

Or stick with the plan for a V8?

You really can't beat the LSx as far as a platform is concerned. Want to make A TON of power? No problem. Want to get great efficiency, all the time? Absolutely. Want to be able to get whatever part you need, where-ever you are? Yep.

Funny, I had the same intentions with my 242 when I got it....I dreamed of a LS9 or whatever their big supercharged one is, in front of a T56 and a ford 8.8"

Ended up going the route of a B230FT squirter and a T5 with a Truetrac in the stock dana 30 instead.

A Bimmer powered 242 would get me excited though.

And I'm not saying that I wouldn't go LS down the road but I'm dumping all available funds into the suspension, brakes, and interior right now, the bimmer swap is free and at my disposal. It would be fun to megasquirt it with a turbo, it also will have a more exotic exhaust sound trather than the normal V8 sound.

I had thought about the B230FT but it would end up being a scratch build and the cost would get prohibitive to start. Down the road I'm not opposed to building a monster and keep it all Volvo power maybe even a yamaha V8.

I have a bit of a problem where I like to push a rope, the LS or 5.0 swap is pedestrian, albeit easy power, I'd like it to be a little weird.

I'm not a believer of LS engines... Unless they have Evans Coolant in them, then things change...

Ahh yes, the old "I want to do this because its different, although more difficult!". Not that its a bad thing, as I think a BMW powered Volvo would be really cool. There are superchargers and turbo kits available for the BMW as you say, so the "easy" power available for the LS is just cheaper. The bolt on stuff for the BMW is also pretty easy, just a bit pricier. And you cant get replacemant engine parts at Pepboys.

Less pedestrian = more $$$. I'm sure you have already taken that into account. Just my $.02, Volvo's are already pretty "different", so building a fast powerful grocery getter with a stock power plant is gonna naturaly get attention, unless you spend all your time with other "different" Volvo drivers!

I do understand the desire to power one car with the engine of another though. Have you done any other custom swaps?

I'm not a stranger to cut/fab/weld but this will be my first hydrid swap. The way I look at it I have a running/driving, complete swap that will need little other than fabbed engine/trans mounts, exhaust work, driveshaft, and provisions for the hydraulic TO bearing, that should cover it if I transfer over the stock harness and ECU. Why not make use of it?
Ultimitely it's less of a "be different" swap than this would keep me busy working on the car which is what I like doing and the toy fund is too low to pick up a complete LS swap at the moment.

The BMW M50B25 is a drop in to the 240. Here's a link to a sample thread on savarturbo. http://forum.savarturbo.se/viewtopic...7829&start=210

The m50 drops in with the 3-series oil pan. People are turbocharging these things like mad.

Looks like it belongs there. I would still go with an LSX. Unbelievable power/torque/reliability for the money. And as mentioned above, you can get anything you can possibly think of for one.

5.0/T5Z/8.8" rear in my 242 -- been absolutely a blast for 15 years/55k miles. But were I doing it now I'd drop an LS3 or LS7 in it. May pull the Ford at some point and make the swap anyway.

That BMW does look like it belongs, and that looks like a very clean install to boot.

The reason most of those BMW sixes are available is because folks pulled them to put - wait for it - LS motors in.

Go with the M50 and when you get bored (quickly), turbo it.

I'll say this as I have put a BMW engine in a volvo. It is NOT a drop in affair. You WILL have to modify the crossmember.

Default swap

Anybody read last months Eueotuner? 500 HP B-230 in a E-30, I personally don't like those M50,M52, so on, Ruhr seem delicate and quite frankly a pain in the ass to work on. HOWEVER, they do make crazy power up high with a big blower!!!

If it was easy women and children would do it. Anyone can bolt a swap in, it's more fun to make your own parts and pieces to make it fit.

I say go with a VW aircooled engine--single port 1300 It is different and would be fun to see if it could move the Volvo.

Otherwise 8 cylinder Maserati or a Lotus. I think they would fit and be truly different.

Shamelesss plug I know, but, my 600hp T6 is for sale for 2k, with the mounts to make it bolt into a 240. Let's see any swap beat that in hp/$.
