Pat was at my place last night right about the time I got home and like always giving me a bad time about something.
He took off and I got to work cleaning and doing busy work in the engine bay. Cleaning and trying to figure out what to do. I decided that it was time to get some stuff done... Pulled the harness back from the drivers fender and laid it on the engine, removed the battery tray and all the crap near it. Pulled the master cylinder loose from the booster and laid it near the engine as well. Masked off a few things, then cleaned, scuffed and cleaned the firewall again. Shot the entire firewall with sem trim black. I scuffed and painted the booster as well while I was in there, it looked a bit rough. I shot some black self etch primer on the inner fenders as my plan was to do them in sem black. I dont know what it was but I just did not think that it was going to turn out well like that, with the underside of the hood body color it just seemed unfinished to me. So, little bit more prep work on those, sanded with 240 primed, sanded down a few scratches and blemishes on the inner fenders, core support and radiator sides and I was cleaning, scuffing priming and masking. Painted it in the driveway by flashlights and my garage security light....that was fun let me tell you. Masked up and ready to get rid of the last of the original blue. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some paint on it... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So I used all the last of my paint last night so I need to get some more of that today, need to pickup exhaust parts so that I can get going on that this weekend. Been having a tough time finding a source for 3.5" v band clamps and Columbia river mandrel does not see to be stocking 3" stainless parts lately. Thinking I might work on the oil feed and drain this weekend as well, and maybe even get an intercooler set in there. Anyways, more work to continue soon. Sean |

Worked on cleaning and reassembly this evening. I think that it will look pretty good when its all put together.
Painted a bunch of brackets and worked mostly on the drivers side. Cleaned up and reran the harness into the drivers fender, even though its not a tucked harness I wanted it to look clean. I think its getting there. Anyways, here is a few pics of what it looks like now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ordered all my exhaust and intake tubing today and picking it up tomorrow. I have most of the stuff to get started on some of the exhaust and intake piping this weekend. Need a 3.5" vband flange still, a 1.5" flex connection and figure out an intercooler..... Sean |

That paint looks awesome. I'm really into what you've done with this so far-I liked the original iteration a lot, and this approach looks like it'll be just as cool.

Do those tube turbo manifold last on daily drivers? I know that would last about two days on a turbo honda. I build manifolds out of 304 schedule 40 pipe and they will even eventually crack after a few years on real daily driven cars. I'm all about cast manifolds for daily drivers.

Nice work as usual, just wondering what the direction of this build is? As you have the incredibly clean 242 and the 244v8 right? Is this just a fun/fast/play car?

I sold the uber clean 242 with the turbo 8v in it.
Still daily drive the ls swapped 242. Believe it or not, this is for my wife...... She loves cars and daily drives a 2006 TDI jetta and always complains that its super boring. So enter in a cheap fun car for her to drive. Then I get it home, tear it apart and decide to do a little work on it, and a little more work and then I end up using it to learn about megasquirt and holsets. I really dont know what will happen to the car when its done, probably have a little fun with it before I sell it. I want to see how this Megasquirt stuff works and see how much I can get out of the stock 8v. Picked up all my 3" stainless exhaust at lunch today, only thing I really need is a flex pipe and a 3.5" vband assembly to attach to the turbo. 55superbeetle.....No idea how long it will last, no plans to daily drive it but I have heard good things about these manifolds. I like this build a lot. Extra point for putting a Holset on your wife's car.

Thanks for the props.... I dont think she is going to know what to do with it when its done
Thanks for the heads up on the EVO intercooler. Amazingly I was able to pick one up locally on Craigslist even better yet.....only a hundred bucks. ![]() Spent some time at the diesel truck drags in Woodburn and was supposed to pick up my machined vband clamp and flange........well he forgot it. Got home and played in the garage a while. The intercooler is short so it needed some support from the bottom. Used some 2x 3/8" c channel to build a stand for the intercooler to sit on and put it at the right heaght and still keep airflow to the radiator. ![]() So with the evo intercooler at the right height and spacing from core support I took a page from my wheeling handbook. Made a template from cardboard of the profile of the core support, the rise to the intercooler and the rise up to the radiator and a flange to hold the back of the radiator Took some sheetmetal over to the brake and came back with this piece. ![]() ![]() You can see how it will support everything and look nice and clean when its all finished up. It goes over the back of the radiator and fastens with the two screws that hold the fan shroud to the radiator. But it was just boring as all get out and I like to build stuff so I marked it all up with some markers and knocked a bunch of 1-3/8" holes in it. ![]() Took that out back to the press and some dimple dies and came back with this. ![]() So I finished this up by drilling some holes in the core support and bolting it all down with some volvo fasteners left over from the show car. I think it finished up the front of the car much better than the stock stuff or some hoakey mount for the intercooler. ![]() Also was able to get a trip out to St Helens in on Friday and pick up some exhaust, wasegate and hot and cold piping. I am doing everything in stainless, mostly for the finished look that I want but also because I suck and dont have a way to weld aluminum. ![]() With the intercooler in place I took the coolant tank out and threw the turbo on. Evo intercooler worked out pretty good and the hot side pipe is nice and short. Trying to create a brushed finish with the stainless for the intercooler piping. ![]() ![]() ![]() So there you have it.... Intercooler done. Need to remount the oil cooler tomorrow, but I have a plan so no big deal. Need to build a transition from 3.5" to 3" tomorrow and might start on the downpipe but without the flange I am kind of shooting blind. Might tack it all up and see how it goes. Oh...Should I paint the radiator support wrinkle black or scuff it and shoot it with clear to stand out? Sean Last edited by hackster; 08-05-2012 at 01:05 AM.. |

Worked all day wiring up a buggy for a friend. Only managed to get the coolant reservoir moved out of the way of the turbo discharge line.
Funny that you mention its missing something Nathan.....I am still trying to figure out what is supposed to go on that side of the motor. Any Ideas? Maybe you could show me a picture of what goes there? ![]() I am on the fence still about whether to paint black or clear it. Sean |

Not yet,
I am waaaay over budget already. I would like to get it up and running and see what I can make the b21ft do. If I want more, build a 230 squirter motor 2.5 with an rsi head on it. But it will have all the support that I need now, get all the bugs worked out on this first. Sean |
