And replace it with a M90!!!!!!
Here's some pics of the 2 boxes side by side. (M90 on left) ![]() M46 in the background ![]() Different propshafts. M90 is the Longer one. ![]() As for difficulty of the conversion. Basically its like replacing a m46 with another. All i had to fab up was a bracket bolted to the 2 rear gearshift gaitor bolts to hold the rear of the gearlever up, as 940's have a bracket there allready. Cable ties are your best friend!!!!! ![]() I used a 940 Turbo Diesel M90 Equipped Friction Plate to get correct Splines(disc is same diameter as M46 One), used the stock M46 pressure plate, and then just used the standard release bearing that came with the m90. ![]() Guessing the other numbers are Sachs Part Numbers , the volvo part number is 9143348 ![]() As for overall impressions, this box is fantastic!!! The car is incredibly quiet, no gear noise at all, it shifts through the gears very slickly, and so far 1 little raised boost run the clutch is holding the 1.1bar boost. The biting point on the clutch is just like the M46, which is great as the M90 Equipped 940's with there dual mass Flywheels have a horrible biting point. |

Nice swap there! Now you can make big power and blow out that V6 that tried to hang with you.

Yes My car has a 9 inch or 228mm stepped Flywheel.
I will look at the old M46 Friction disc tonight to see what brand it is and report back on the part numbers for you. Were you after part numbers for a Clutch Kit for an M46 Gearbox on a 740?? I can get you the Volvo partnumber tonight from Vadis, but as for Sachs Part numbers i might struggle there, unless my old friction disc is a sachs part. |

Been thrashing the arse out of the car today, Man this thing is great.
I wouldnt have thought swapping boxes would have made that much of a difference, but boy has it. 1st to 2nd change is fantastic, it slots into 2nd gear and bam it just keeps pulling, whereas before the car would bog a bit before going. As for the 850R Clutch neil, i'll look into it, but this derv plate seems to be handling all the torque i'm throwing at it very comfortably indeed. I don't think 5th Gear is as low as the M46's Overdrive cos at 3k i'm doing 80mph whereas i'm sure that was 85mph with the M46. Now i need to find another M90 and fit one to the Estate. |

only thing is the 850R plate might mean having to swap from the stock flywheel to the later dual mass one.

Hehehe damn you guys and your good gearboxes. I'm stuck with m46's that just can't handle what I need them to handle. I have to admit it hurts seeing something bolt up so easily that works so well lol. Lucky Europeans. Hey we got some of the 240 e-codes as an option in Canada so why couldn't we have gotten those?

Started at 3pm finished at 10pm, wasnt exactly rushing as it was pissing it down with rain for most of that time. Also my assistant when ever my back was turned had pissed off and could be found playing Medal of Honour Pacific Something. Also i spent a good hour searching my **** tip of a garage for some metal strip to make that little rear bracket, as well as the obligorty search for other tools. |

Hi there!
European scrap yards!? Search further ;) M90s are bought in the matter of seconds. Like if the car had an accident, then, as soon as it is delivered to the scrappie, there are 4 or 5 Volvo drivers waiting in front of the office... What I don't understand is why Volvo didn't make the M90 have a gear pattern like the M47: R 1 3 5 | | | | ------ | | 2 4 Regards from Germany D. |
