Default lookee what i found! (bigazz turbo?)

i got this from a buddy for free, it came off an '90 RX7. it needs rebuilding, and i can see i'm going to need to do some work on the exhause side of the thing to make it work, as well as rebuild it, but what do you guys thing? some research has shown this to (most likely) be a t3/t4. it sure is a hell of a lot bigger than my stock turbo.

what do you guys think?

ht18 eh? you'd be better served making the turbine fit a garrett turbine housing (it will)

Its a series 5 turbo II rx7 HT18.

The turbo is a good one for rx-7's but i am not soo sure its a good choice for a volvo. The compressor wheel drops off pretty hard around 12psi..

If you have any questions ask my buddy Brian at BNR Supercars. He builds those turbos for a living. The turbine housing will be difficult to make work but good luck any how.

One of the corner workers put it best regarding sam's volvo thrashing:

"Sam is setting the front up for next turn, whilst the rear of the wagon is still recovering from 3 turns ago."

Ebay it and buy something more suitable. Not trying to pee on your cornflakes, its just nt a good turbo for a 2.3

That twin scroll housing will be difficult to adapt, and without a splitter of some good heat reistant material, it will probably overheat.. And cause more drag.
But it could be a interesting turbo to use, but I think it isn't worth it .

Would be easiest just to make a new exhaust manifold. If he is a skilled machinist and fabricator as he says it shouldn't be too hard to weld a new exhaust header. Would also be much better flowing than the stock exhaust manifold.

Is that turbo scary white color inside or is that my imagination? What does a pinging/detonating rotary sound like?

how about not wasting time trying to do the "square peg in a round hole" thing and ebaying it and buying a turbo that will bolt up and work properly?

yeah. this is the official plan. once i gave it more than like 2 seconds thought after i found out its not a t3/t4 its destined either for ebay, and if it doesnt sell, for the workbench for complete disassembly in the name of science.

is that what all that tan/whitish stuff is? i assumed that was normal...(i know precisely squat about turbos stilll...aside from the part about being spun by the exhaust and making a crapload more power )

Interesting looking turbo, never seen one of those before.

white just means it was nice and blistery hot in there, standard operating proceedure for a rotary, and fairly normal on my cars as well, i might add.

low boost detonation on a rotary sounds like a whistling noise, and contrary to popular belief, they'll take a little abuse (but not much, and really not much above around 15psi i'm told).

Indeed, that white color indicates a very high temperature.. The devider shouldn't be too much of a problem now I think of it....
I have seen truck turbo's that had the devider, and no exhaust manifold with devider. The devider looked like someone cut a inch of it away with a angle grinder.. totally cut in half..

ok, so its not a good turbo for a volvo. what makes it bad? other than the work involved, what makes it "bad"? is it just a matter of the way it makes power?

What Deathwagon said:
"The compressor wheel drops off pretty hard around 12psi."

It isn't designed for the high pressure ratios that our motors need to make good power. It gets inefficient and starts to superheat the air past 12psi.

No, not too small or inefficent, it does not support the pressure ratio required. It is entirely efficent within it's operating range, and a turbo can be capable of 500hp and still have a map that falls of at 12psi. It would not be "too small", it would simply be wrong.
