PIAA head lamps

I am wondering if anybody has tried using PIAA light bulbs.
Are they really worth the money? Are they really the closest thing you can get to real HID's?

You can get them here for $45 plus shipping. That's for 850 low beams, but I imagine they have others too, if it's not the same.

I don't have them myself, but I've heard mixed reviews, some people like, some don't. The PIAA bulbs do operate at the stock wattage, so you don't have to worry about overheating of wires, etc.

Also look for PIAAs on ebay.

My buddy had PIAA's on his 94 854 and we both liked them alot.

They are bright! Not as much as HID (duh) but they defiently through out whiter light.

Guitars, PIAA is a headlight bulb company.

I use Sylvania silverstars which are about $40-50 depending, but they are nice and bright and bright white with no yellow and only a slight blue hint. I like them alot and they are brighter than stock. Haven't compared them to the PIAA's though...

those things should be engineered to be not so bright so it doesn't piss everyone off on the raod. I drive around with my high beams on all the time now that those things are being used.

Nope, kragens carries them.

They also have the same set up, but in a standard sealed light, like one the early 240's. Ricey, but hey the do help a bit.

If they're aimmed right, they'll stay out of your eyes.

i have the sylvanias in my 850 but i only paid 15.99 a piece... thiert great cause thier is none of that seconed color in them no matter what angle you look at just pure white... only thing that sucks is if your one of those people that just changed the bulb in the side markers to a clear one they will now look yellowish in comparision.

Silverstar's are sold at most autozones, pepboys, and checker's. They are nice except in extreme snow I don't think they're as good. (More white reflection than the yellow light bulbs) Gotta get some dichroic fog lights ;)

So do the Sylvania's give off a pure white colour or is there a hint of blue in them? Not really looking for that ricey blue.. i like the pure white look... and yellow bulbs are too plain looking..

Just a hair of blue.

Course, on my 87, the lamps were so yellow they almost looked green!

Most important lighting upgrade you can make is to get e-code lenses. They bend more light below the 'horizon,' putting more of it on the road and less of it in the trees. And the high beams are beyond belief....with stock halogens.

If you have an 850, you can run halogens 30% over stock on the 9004/9006 lamps. Philps Premium is an example. Some are filtered blue (to remove yellow light - reduces light output to 20% over stock and increases heat slightly), but the light appears whiter and adds contrast. Sylvania SilverStar and Philips BlueVision are good examples. (These are stock 55W.)

If you have S/V/C 70 and newer, you can run halogens 50% over stock. Philips VisionPlus and Hella LightPower H1, H4 and H7. These lights aren't filtered, as the assumption is you want the light output not the whiter color temperature. (In my S70 with E-codes and Philips VisionPlus, I throw light further than HID-equipped late-model Audis and BMWs; the Volvo e-codes are outstanding in SVC70, S60 and new V70; passable in S80.) (These are stock 55W.)

Of course, HID conversion kits are available around $400. The 98-and up FWD's with the great Volvo e-codes would match the M-B's for light quality with HID's installed! (35W system.)

I used the PIAA hyperwhite H4 bulbs for awhile. They worked well. But I didn't think they were any better than other high
quality H4 bulbs I've used in the past. I think the really good
upgrade to do is to up the wattage. Then you can really get
some major light on the road. Of course on a 240 to do that
you have to add relays and some heavier wire. Well worth the
effort. This is one of my projects in the near future. I have some
90/100 narva brand bulbs to put in some Stanley H4 euro lights

how do i know what kind to use? do i just get the bulb model number on my stock bulbs? and can u use them in fog lights? cuz i dont really like the look of blue headlights and yellow fogs...

and does anyone know where pure white bulbs (of any kind for an '88 740) would be available in canada?
