Default Steering and fron suspension problem

Hi All

I have a bit of a problem with my front suspension

A bit of history on what has been done
New lowered springs
New shocks
New rack ends
May be new ball joints
New poly bushes for the control rods bushes

These mods have been done for around 40.000 to 50.000 Km

The problem is I have a wobble in the front end under acceleration and the same wobble under braking. This wobble can be felt through the steering wheel

The problem has been there from when I first fitted the spring shocks and other stuff. In this time I have had the 16 inch Geminis and lately I have fitted the 17 inch wheels it has got worse. I have worked out it can't be a bent wheels so it has to be something wrong with the suspension

Try swaping front and rear rims. See if that helps.

This is a dumb ? but are all the lug nuts tight?

yeah, as Boosted2003 said, try those first.... simplest things to check...

could be you have had a wobble from before elsewhere in your suspension, but the new stiffer shocks, springs, and bushings have radiated it more (where the old softer, worn components damped this wobble)...just a thought

I said in the post that there has been two sets of wheels on this car with regular wheel rotations & balances

All the wheel nuts are new and tight

I don't remember a wobble before I did the shocks&springs and others stuff. But the problem is through the supension movement up and down during braking and take off

There isn't much it could be
May be the ball joints (I can't remember if I replaced them)
The top bearing plate
or a aligment problem

Default suspension problems!

Hi, I Sweden we have discovered that lowering a 740-940 does cause suspension malfunctions. This is due to lack of spring travel when using lowered springs. Why? it is a design issue. Even the folks racing in volvo-original cup arena has this to ponder about.

Some experience more some less but it is present at higher speeds and at braking - acc.

I know of it since I have it on my 940 with a complete set of lowering stuff. spring, custom dampers, swaybars, polys. Solution according to racers are: lenghten the frontsuspension controlarms about 1.5inch will cure it more or less. ONLY if using metal arms, NOT the aluminum ones, enlarge the 2 holes that the topplate is attached to to get more ajustability.
(mine is on the works to see results) Another thing one can do is to grind loose the bottom springplate and lowered it about 1 inch. Remember to watch for clearence everywhere and with steering arms. (lenghtwise)

An idea for now go back to 15x7/8 rims and test. it should decrease the wobble a bit.

Default Steering and front suspension problem

Hi All

Hi petersvolvo Thank you for that info it's good to hear for a person for the land of volvo. I had worked out 700 series had a gentic problem when fitted with lowered springs.

I found this info on another post
this is the link for the post http://www.forums.turbobricks.com/sh...ad.php?t=51025

700/900 Series front suspension info. from VADIS:

Control arm stay:

6819079 LG 388.5mm
*) Service version for cars with brake vibrations

Control arm - steel
Left - 1387682 Exc. Multi-Link
Left - 1387682 Multi-Link (3530557)
Right - 1387683 (3530558) Exc. Mulit-Link

Control arm -aluminum
Left -1330937 Repl. 1Pcs 1387682-6,
1Pcs 3530789-1 *) For cars without 16" rims.
1Pcs 3530790-9 *) For vehicles with 16" rims.
Right -1330938 Repl. 1Pcs 138783-4,
1Pcs 3530789-1 *) For cars without 16" rims.
1Pcs 3530790-9 *) For vehicles with 16" rims.

I notice the info on the alloy control arms. When did volvo first use the alloy front arms

Would changing the length of the radius rod have any effect on this problem
