Hi People.
So many snippits of information on this subject that I thought I would try and finalize a thread and include as much information on the subject as we can for people......well, like me. I have an 83 turbo with some cut springs. I purchased some offset spacers and would love to know all I can about compatable wheels, tires and bolt patterns. Guess I will start with this....These are the spacers I purchased and some information from the seller. They are 108mm pattern for Volvo, which is same pattern as Mercedes, Audi & some others. They're 25mm & 30mm thick and I used the 25mm on front/30mm on rear. I used them on my 240 Turbo wagon to mount 850R 17" wheels which are front-wheel-drive wheels with all that positive offset/backspacing. I believe all the Volvo ft wheel drive wheels have the same positive offset, and all the rear wheel drive cars (240 & 740/760) to have the same negative offset, but they were specifically made for adapting the FWD wheels to the RWD car. They use the Volvo lugnuts, but I don't recall their thread size. They were machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and are hub-centric as Volvo wheels are. Hope this helps you. Lots of help for sure. I am running 15in virgos with 205/70/15 tires. Here is a question or 2 for you if I may? Here is some practical information I have found. Is it true? Comments or suggestions? From somebody else..... I just want to provide a quick summary of 240 wheels, and some others that will fit. Basically, all 740 wheels and most ?70 and newer 1800/140 wheels should theoretically fit, although there might be problems with the brake caliper not fitting. Most 240?s came with 14" steel wheels. ?75-?79 had a one-piece chrome hubcap that covered the lugnuts. ?80-?85?s had a similar, but two-piece chrome hubcap, with black or chrome centers. Then there was a pretty ugly plastic cover that covered almost the whole wheel, with a lot of fins on the outside rim. The later cars had a nice one-piece plastic hubcap. As far as alloys, there were two kinds of optional 5-spoke 14x5.5" alloy wheel available for the early GL?s (GLE?s?) and Bertones that is very rare nowadays. ?78-?79 GT?s had a 14x5.5" alloy with short fins on the outer edge. They are nice-looking, but they are useless to the performance enthusiast due to their small size. ?80 GT?s and all GLT?s and Turbos had the 5-spoke 15x6" alloy that Volvo calls "Virgo". Very good looking wheel in my opinion (I have 3 sets, you can see one set on my GT), and quite common, too. These are the wheels for the performance enthusiast on a budget. A set can be picked up for about $250-350. maybe less from a junkyard. Original tire size was 195/60R15, common upgrade sizes are 205/60R15, 205/55R15, or 215/55R15. GL?s in the late 70?s started wearing the 25-spoke 14" alloys. These wheels are pretty hard to clean, tend to loose their hubcaps, and are pretty ugly in my opinion. K that was informative too. More info? Anthony Hyde...thank you Reportably, widening the rear track on a 240 Volvo by using a set of rear spacers gives a a 2 to 3 g handling improvement on a skidpan. Examples of spacer thicknesses to achieve a wider track: RIM DIMENSION TIRE / TYRE SIZE OPTIMIZED SPACER THICKNESS FINAL OFFSET Standard 15" 20 mm or ~ 25/32" 20 - 20 = 0 mm 16 X 7 with std rim offset 20 mm 205 / 50 /16 17 mm or ~ 43/64" 20 - 17 = 3 mm 16 X 7 with std rim offset 20 mm 225 / 50 /16 8 mm or 5/16" 20 - 8 = 12 mm Notes: On a 240 with Volvo spec rims, to fit spacers over 5 mm thick, longer wheel studs are definitely required - check for full nut thread length. The 240 Volvo & SAM extended wheel bolts (studs) are available individually part #8360085. Volvo and SAM can also supply a 240 Spacer Kit #8360083 that includes 2 x 20 mm rear wheel spacers plus 10 extended wheel bolts and longer attachment screws (as required, the spacers can be machined thinner). For the 740, the SAM longer stud is #9508764 . Nearly all large Volvos use a 5 x 108 PCD stud pattern. 100-series : 5 holes, 108mm bolt circle and 25mm offset. - some 100-series wheels will not fit in front of 200-series 200-series : 5 holes, 108mm bolt circle and 20mm offset. 700-series : 5 holes, 108mm bolt circle and 25mm offset. - 700-series will fit 200-series and vice versa 900-series : 5 holes, 108mm bolt circle and 25mm offset On 240 & 740 models, 7x16" rims fit perfectly with 20 mm offset and will never rub. For 7 1/2" rims you need less offset say around 15-16 mm, not more. Genuine Volvo 16" rims are lighter than most alternatives, but most alternatives have more visual appeal. What have you seen fitted on 240 that are nice looking? Thinking about 16, 17 or 18 inch rims...What do you think? As far as compatable volvo wheels from front wheel drives, what looks nice on a 240? I would love a deep dish look, a 3 piece wheel, or the infamous polaris. Keeping this simple, I would not like to roll the fender lips, or any sheetmetal work. Some wheels I have been considering.... Polaris 7*17 Med pirelli 215-45-17? 17" X 8" Fittipaldi Polaris wheels? OZ wheels? 18X7 Fittipaldi "Tubolare" w/ 225/40-18 Nitto NT555's? Rondell Y-design rims (called super-dtm in sweden) they are available in 8,5x17 & 8,5x18, but they are only available in 5x108 in sweden, normally they come in 5x120 (Beemer)? http://www.boydcoddington.com/Wheels...timeless6.html Thank you for reading this....If there are any refutes please do. Then there's this little tidbit of info: the 95+ 960s used the later FWD offset wheels, which would be somewhere around +40mm offset, if not exactly +40mm.That's what I've gathered... Peace! |

That and I've never seen an Audi or Mercedes with a 108mm circle. Audi is 4x or 5x100mm and Mercedes is I think 5x120. Ford FWD and Lincoln MkVIII used 108mm bolt circles but the hub diameter is smaller than a Volvo, and the Fords used I think 35-40mm offset for all these style wheels, though I'm not sure 'bout the Linc.

I'll test the my moms bent mercedes wheel tomorrow to see if it fits. My brother's Ford Tarus SHO's wheels fit my 1800 E (5x108) & had a +35mm offset.

Hi,
I am shopping around for some wheels for my 940 turbo, and have found some nice RSL Mace wheels on ebay. They are 18x7.5 and the tires to fit are 235/40-18's. I am somewhat perplexed by the spacer requirements... other posts here indicate either 20mm or 15-16mm. I want to get this right the first time before ordering, I don't want any fender mods, and I don't want to throw off the car's tracking geometry either! Thanks for any input... |
