Default TD05-12B, What Is it good for?

I pulled this turbo off an '88 760t in teh J/Y. Couldn't find it listed in the turbo size data chart.

By the way, what do the last 3 figures signify, i.e. "13G" etc?

if you have the means, you could send it to someone like Herman at Cherry Turbos to have it rebuilt/upgraded to a larger compressor wheel. the TD05 turbine side is larger and flows better than a TD04, so ultimately, with a proper cold side on it, has greater potential for power making. PM Infector 944 and Steve C about it, they both have modded TD05s

Cool. All I knew before pulling it was what I read in a turbo faq at brickboard. The faq said the TDO5 was good for making more boost than, for example, the TD04 in my 945.

Another thing you need to know is that nobody has yet mated one of these to a 90+ manifold. At least the pre 90's are cheap and plentiful.

to me the volvo TDO5 is a "dead end" turbo platform for making big (250hp+) power. ((is it sad that I think 250whp is big power?))

Without machine work you will never...

1. get a bigger compressor wheel (16g and bigger require a H size turbine wheel)
2. get it to mate to a 90+ manifold. (its possible but timeconsuming and potentially can ruin the turbine housing.
3. Have a good workin wastegate. (a external wastegate is the only way I can see that crapy gate working well.

So you read that and thought well then what's the point.

Here's the point. If you are looking for a huge squirl sucking turbo, look twords another platform. The tdo5 12b will not easily compete with a t3/4 hybrid or a holset, or another specialty performance turbo.

By machining the turbine housing to acept the bigger mitsubhishi heavy industries wheel (H denoted on tdo5H) you can add much larger compressor wheels. A tdo5h hot side and a 16G or better cold side will flow much more than any of the td04 offerings. You are still limited to the soso design of the volvo tdo5 turbine housing. Poor internal wastegate, and ment only for a pre 90 manifold.

For a daily driver, for someone who dosent have a 90+ mani or the budget to get a real performance turbo, or for someone who dosent want to make 300hp, its a fine turbo.

To directally answer your question a td05 12b has an exhaust side that flows better than a tdo4h 13G but the 12b compresor wheel is not as effeciant.

This concludes my rambeling.

I have a TD05-12B hybrid with TD05HL-16G compressor from Cherry Turbo, pretty much everything was brand new, and its trouble free, before it had an exhaust leak the turbo spools up pretty nice and it moves. I didn't dyno it, but now I have to fix the damn exhaust leak.

and yes, I had to use the pre-90 manifold, kind of a downgrade, at least I port it out.

Cherry Turbo isn't cheap, but Herman does great work.

I know how to get one on a 90+ as well, I have both the manifold and the housing. I just had to remove matterial from the housing. I havent found a way to make the seats for the nuts flush so its not a practical solution yet. Lets chat off line, about it.

What mods other than the 'bolts' did you make to the mani/TD-05? Run good?

Do you still need a TD05 housing to experiment on? I can't supply a '90-on mani, though.

LOL. I guess you could always bust out the angle grinder wrench to remove it.

That's the corner I was going to have problems with using my angled 16t housing, but I think I will be able to work on the flange on the mani a little bit (clearance, flatten it out), drill out the hole, and then use a stud on the housing with a nut sitting on the flange.
