I was giving my 86 240 a tune up and was replacing the spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I got the cap off and went to remove the rotor and it will not pull off. My haynes manual says it should come strait off. Any tips would be great.
Thanks |

I recommend power words and a long flat screwdriver to pry it up.

How hard should I force. Is there anything that will break before the rotor comes free?

They do get stuck on there pretty well. Just get yourself set and pull straight up on the rotor. It should come off. If not then you can use two screwdrivers. Put each one opposite the other, under the edge of the rotor and pry up at the same time with both screwdrivers. That should pop it off or destroy it. Either way it'll come off. Watch out for the flying plastic if it breaks. Wear some goggles for the prying part.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wrapped a water ski tow rope around it and used a large screw driver as a handle and gave it one big rip. It came off and shattered into about 3-4 pieces. Im pretty sure that this rotor was at least 15 years old.

Sounds normal. In my experience, they either come off with a little bit of effort, or they get ripped off, breaking into an uncountable number of pieces and fragments. Last time I broke one off, I couldn't find the new one that I KNEW I had. That was more frustrating than trying to remove it.
