I've been told that they're glued on, and you have to cut them off.... but i haven't seen for myself.
You might like to play around with those in the junk yard before you wreck your own. |

You carefully pop off the shift lock button on top. Put your hand over the top of it while you do it or the spring inside will go flying around the cabin. Note: do not lean over it with your face close to it.
Easiest to do with a thin flat-blade screwdriver. To put it back on you need to hold the inner shaft that the shift lock button attaches to. The button actually has little ridges around the little hole in the bottom that correspond to a groove in the inner shaft - thats all the holds it in. If you don't fully seat the shift lock button, it will come off at the most mis-opportune moment. It happened to my wife as she sat in traffic and it scared the crap out of her. Hope this helps.

Well... never pulled off the hard plastic type, but if it's the rubbery type in a 240, done it many times (definitely not glued on)....
... after you have the lock button off the top, push out the OD button and disconnect the wires. Now place the lever all the way back (to low), tighty grasp the knob with both hands, and pull HARD straight up. The knob is a press fit and will come off. Try not to hit yourself in the nose. Dave B.
