Default Hood vent (not scoop) on my 740

Hey guys my next project (like they never end) is to mount a hood vent on my car.
Not a scoop but a flush vent.
Why? Earlier in the year I sent a strut thru the top of my hood on the pass. side.
Well I got the junky (brand new) autozone POS gabriel struts out and placed w/ bilsteins all around. I've been hunting for a hood but can't find anything decent. Thought about doing the newer 940 hood swap, but that's just to much work to do outside during the winter.
I'm now thinking about placing a flush hood vent over the hole. Amazingly the rest of the hood is in excellent condition just the 5/8" area where the strut punched it.
I'm thinking about place a small vent over the area and drilling out the damaged area with a
hole saw.
I'm looking at either a jeep CJ vent that goes over the cowl or a pass. side 280zx vent.
I'll drill a few holes to let the exhaust heat vent out.
Here's what I was thinking -the smaller lower one

or

Let me know what's you think

I'd go for something a little more... Ummm Louvered... I think is the word, where the slats are a little wider, and there's a rake to them, like venetian blinds on your hood.
In my opinion, louvering looks better than a grate. I think the grate would make it look like there's a storm drain on your hood.
a-like so
or a like so

For the simple fix the square vent up top in the OP would most likely be the simplest, but if one wanted to get into really makeing a proper setup than the ones down below may give a better result in the end.

I've looked at that top-most 280z vent pictured myself several times.. Something could be done.. And if you're going to look for another hood the 760 diesel hood is made out of aluminum.

Yeah the aluminum hood would be the best, but I can't seem to find one close or at a reasonable price. Regardless I won the jeep vent ($5 ebay). I figure I could run it across or down the hood depending on the overall dimensions. If I need to I could always cut and weld it to the proper dimensions. For $5 even if a good hood comes along I can chuck it out or sell it and wouldn't miss anything. Ill probably fill in the screw holes and double side it to the hood.
I'll post pics to see what you guys think.

Side note back in the 87 I had a 280zx. Beautiful two tone silver and blue 1983 loved that car. Worked on the motor until she screamed. Left the races one night with a buddy who hadn't been in the car in a while. Nice cold summer night with the windows open Turbo loving the cold air. No one on the road on a section of highway where I knew no troopers would be. Pulling 5K in 5th gear (Remember back in the 80's the speedos ran out at 85) a F&^#ing deer ran out in front of me. No time to react I hit it after it stumbled with it's hoofs on the hard road. Launched me in the air off one guard rail across the median backwards up aginst the other guard rail backward. Called my buddy after walking (actually running we were so pumped) to a pay phone- long before cells.
He just unloaded his race and came and picked us up with his trailer. Cut the motor and trans out. Sold the interior and cried when I dropped the shell off at the j/yard
I still may use the 280zx vent just for sentimental reasons.

I still have work to do.

It's either cover the dent or repaint my hood.
To recap My strut tube went thru my hood after go off road to avoid a Scion POS.
I had a 280zx and all ways loved the vent. I tried keeping the louvers, but couldn't.
in order to do so I would have to cut my hood or have the vent sit a 1/8" off the hood.

I'm going to vent out some of the under hood heat thru it. I'm drilling a 2" hole in the front. No the whole thing won't be open.
Thanks
CJ

Definitely louvered and like Delfosse said, put it somewhere a bit more functional. A louvered vent directing air to the turbo would make more sense to me (functionally) than a vent in the back-left. Unless your wiper motors (or strut nuts) are having an overheating problem, but in that case, instead of a vent, you should check the strut's thermostat and make sure it's still working and wired up right. If it's not that, then definitely your wiper motor, and unless you have a thick wallet, you don't even wanna know about the wiper motors.

he is putting it over the strut nut since his strut let go and put a dent tip-pee style dent I assume in his hood from the top of the strut. Perhaps only put the upper courner of the vent to cover the strut problem and try to get it as close to the turbo as possbile?

Ok I guess you guys don't like it. Then again i didn't expect much.
I cannot position the vent any where else. It needs to be in that
position in order to cover the damaged area. All it's there for is to hide the damage area.
The 2 inch hole will be there to allow the excess heat vent out.
I guess you guys don't like the 850 bumpers either

If its a vent and now a scoop I would have the loovers facing the back of the car
the hood scoop has a second function of releaseing the air entering the radiator at the top of the body of the car as oposed to being forced under the car (and creating a small amount of lift)

I would rather re-paint the hood. Depending on the damage, get a new one. A small dent in your hood won't hurt until you've got the $ for a new one (lots of cars have dents and still work ;)) My hood has a spot that bends really easily, I hate it. It's aluminum and on the left side, the hinges are too strong for the hood, every time I close it, it bends and I have to jam it back down once the hoods closed... Better than a steel hood, tho.

If not, who cares, slap it on and see how it looks while you save for a new (aluminum?) hood. It's your car anyways, who cares what everyone else wants to see on it.
