Default Shortshifter upgrade

I got my Dale shortshifter today in the mail. I have a couple of questions about the install. There is a lot of greyish grease around the bushings. Do I need to regrease upon reassembly? How is the chrome outer shafter(with the reverse lockout collar) removed from the old lever and installed on the new one? Lastly, I have 3 inches of play side2side when in gear and a throw of 6 inches from 1 to 2. Does that sound normal? Are there other parts that need replacing to relieve the slop? I also, got the bushing kit with the shifter.
Thanks

There is a roll pin that Runs through the outer sleeve and the core. It's mounted in a rubber bushing. You need to drive that pin out. Then you pull the outer sleeve off the core. Mind your teeth during this exercise...

Re-grease everything before putting it all back together. The new bushings will look after the slop in the shifter. Your throw should go from 6" to 4" and the whole shifter will feel much more connected...

Thanks, Dale. Yes, you did include instructions, however us wankers sometimes need extra help. i did some searching and it sounds like I may eventually want to put a new dowel pin in at the top of the tranny where the intermediate fork connects.
Thanks again

I can get the pin out of the bottom of the shifter. I have removed the set screw and let it soak in wd-40. It still won't slide out. It is difficult to get any tools or leverage up in the tunnel. Any thoughts?

I think you mean you can't get the lower pin out?

I find some adjustable pliers will work to get it moving. You can usually get at it from the top and get enough leverage on one end to start it moving. Stick it in reverse to expose one end of the pin as much as possible...

Thanks for the tip. I did mean can't. I was concerned that the set screw would be rusted on, but it came out no problem. The car has 24?,??? miles on it and it is pretty crusty underneath. I'll try working on it from the top.

Dale,
Truly, you are !!!
I went up top. Using a door panel remover I was able to knock the pin out. There was enough of an angle to the tool to get some leverage. I am now inside the house, swapping over the parts to the new lever.

I got it all done last night! So far, I am loving the shortshifter. I am now planning to change my tranny fluid to redline or some synthetic.

PM Dale(245gti). Get yourself an adjustable timing gear, too.

I hope you are reffering to your OLD shifter in these descriptions, cause if Dale's shifter is doing that then you installed it wrong. But yes, that sounds about right for a stock shifter, 6" of throw. Although that 3" of slop in gear sounds hideous, most of it is probably in worn out pivot bushings. How much slop do you have now with new bushings and the short throw shifter?

John

Yes, that is with the old shifter. I haven't measured with the new one yet. I can say this though, when shifting now, I keep thinking I have only gotten to neutral and I am actually in another gear. So roughly half the distance or less. The bushings also made a huge difference. My old one weren't cracked or broken, however the new ones were a much tighter fit. I also understand what people mean by a shifter feeling "notchy". I am planning to change the trans fluid to synthetic soon to help smooth out the feel. Overall a great upgrade.
