I thought I would pass on some information I came across that verified a suspicion I have had for a few years. The AW30-40 transmission found in Volvo 960's from 92-98 are actually the same automatic transmission found on twin turbo supras. Check out this link. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/Ve...ssionIndex.htm
Take a look at the supra and the 960. That's right baby! I then did a search on A341E and came up with this article on a full buildup of this transmission. http://www.levelten.com/pdf/turbo.pdf Score! I am finally ready to actually swap the motor on my 960, but first the tranny goes to our trans shop for a buildup. BooYaa.

Wow. Thats pretty interesting... are the trannies identical? Blows my mind that Volvo would put such a strong tranny behind a n/a whiteblock...

hmm upon closer examination, it would appear that you misread-- the a340e thats in the 960 is found in the non turbo supra, the a341e thats in the turbo supra is something different, or so it would seem from that site.. do elaborate.. whats the difference between them..?
upon even closer examination it appears that the transmission in question is found in the 2.6L (L6?) 960s, im guessing thats some sorta euro spec 960 similar to what the whiteblock m90's are found in? this however has piqued my interest as i'm thinking about snagging a 960 to serve as DD for a year or two and then move along into project car status(cause we all know how baddass an I6 dohc is with a big hairdryer ;) ) |

The differences are all internal. I found this out when i decided to change the fluid and filter in my 960s transmission. Volvo says these two items do not have to be changed for the lifetime of the car. I didnt buy it. Nobody stocked a Volvo 960 filter but in my search i found out this transmission was used on the Supra and Supra turbo, LS400 and the Previa minivan. I bought a filter for the LS which was a direct fit. This transmision could easily handle the HP from a T6 with the proper upgrades. There is a company in LA that specializes in beefing up these transmission for Supras.

Just to add some fuel to the fire:
Pretty sure the AW71 was used in Toyota Crowns, Cressedas etc. Knowing Toyota if these models were available in the US they were probably under a different name and you have no idea what I'm talking about, but they were medium/big '80's sedans/wagons with straight sixes of about 2.8L. For example a Previa is a Tarago here in Oz, and it's called something else in other markets. The 2.6 you mention is (I think) just like the standard 3.0 960 motor (they are 3.0 right?) but with a different displacement, for lower spec models. Of course in places like the US and Australia all the 960's were top of the range, so we only ever see the 3.0 with auto trans. I have also heard that it was a 2.5 though, I'm not sure of the exact displacement in cc's.

I do know that toyota uses the aw71 in a pickup truck. SOme one on this board got one becuase it had a ?better valve body? and more clutch plates then our version. He was trying to have it built up but for one reason or another it didnt work out for him. Cant remember why?

AW71 was used in 3rd gen 4runners.
I've got a local shop here that beefed mine up for under $200, if any of you guys are interested... its holding up just peachy. |

Can you fit an ex Toyota AW71 into a Volvo though? The ones I've seen on PRV6's have had bellhousings that are a single perminantly attached piece, cast as one with the main trans body, so I'm pretty sure they can't be fitted to anything other than a V6.

I saw A341E by both Volvo 960 3.0 and Supra 3.0 Turbo.

The automatic bellhousing is bolted from the inside at the pump, so tranny has to be removed to remove bellhousing. |

Interesting, they don't look like they come apart but they would have to be the same as the US cars so I guess they do. Thanks for the info.

i work at a toyota dealer and i can add that the 3rd gen 4runners do in fact have the removable bellhousing just like the AW71.

OK so the bellhousings are removable on the AW71, any chance that a BW35 bellhousing would bolt on? The AW71 is a decendant of the BW35, but it's probably too much to hope.
I may be getting a 164, and it could really benefit from an overdrive gear. |

Man, now you guys are convincing me to pull the AW71 out of my 244ti and put it in my 245 so that I can get rid of that pesky slipping clutch problem. Good idea? Hmm. If for $200 I could get an AW built to withstand 300hp, I think I'd be in the hizouse. This 7.5psi boost I'm running right now is pretty much killing me seeing as I could walk a frickin Z28 2 months ago and now I can barely spank a stock Integra LS.

Replaced with OE unit, valve body mod done at same time. I`m a bit suspicious that the work of the trans builder wasn`t up to scratch but wasn`t able to prove it or afford to try again. Trans currently feels great, car on the dyno 2 weeks ago made 188.5 rwhp, drags start again in 3 weeks, can`t wait !! Cheers Mike
