Default Story of the server swap?

The server swap went well? The board seems to be running smoother than it has in the last few weeks. Thanks for all the effort Dana. It's looking good!

Out of the basement into his bedroom, eh?

I sure hope you've got plans to move away from e2 () sometime (soon).

we get/got a lot more that what we paid for from eleven2. aside from the server crash last year, they have been flawless for dirt cheap.

the plans in the future are to move to a colo hosting setup once we have other things in place to support that kind of monthly cost

Does e2 have any kind of redundancy and any kind of data security in place? The kind of server failure/lack of recovery options is not very impressive. Lets just say that if someone ever asks me for a recommendation on hosting services, e2 isn't going to be on my list. Just my .02.

E2 doesn't even provide telephone support. Flawless? What about their network outage(s)? Prolonged network downtime because they a.) lack hardware with redundant PSUs and b.) relied soley on the 'owner' to fix all problems (noone else is/was available).

Im not selling eleven2's services nor do i have background details about anything behind the scenes... however from what i do know, they have done a decent job with everything thats happened aside from the responsivness regarding the dataloss problem last year.

complain all you want... you get what you pay for, and we got a lot more than what we were paying for. I welcome any and all to try and find a host whos willing to go out of their way for a site that should be paying 8x what it is.

yes the server takes hourly snapshots and every 24 hours the backups are copied to their Dallas datacenter.

there were some tweaks done over the weekend, a few mysql restarts etc. moving stuff to the new DNS, trying to get everything working correctly.

as of now, this week we will be looking at traffic and utilization and making more adjustments this weekend. So if you see anything this week (errors, timeouts, anything) let me know.

It would appear that my e-mail notifications have ceased after the recent batch of tweaks.

we were paying $33 a month, we're now paying a little bit more for a custom VPS with a huge cunk of RAM suitable for a board of our size and no other large sites on our box ... normal managed dedicated servers cost at least $200 a month.

Default Looking good from here!

Aside from the occasional slowness this weekend which I figured was you swapping and changing things. The board has been running smoother and faster. Thanks very much for all the good work, Dana!

For non-mission critical apps I suppose that's fine. In the real world tho, e2 is essentially a joke. No phone support, no redundancy, no real staff to speak of. Blech. I suppose that's acceptable for turbobricks. Maybe not?

If you're willing to simply locate a server near turbobricks members and forgo formal management, you can go as low as $80/mo (maybe lower).

From a more professional ISP, I'd expect to see stuff like this:

Quote:
Thu Mar 15 13:34:37 PDT 2007 -- PG&E Service Outage at our Santa Rosa datacenter and colo facility. We lost PG&E electrical services briefly this morning; Our backup power systems functioned perfectly. By the time we'd made it to the electrical room our genset had already been automatically started and the ATS had just switched over to it. There was no interruption of any services in or provided by our datacenter. It was exciting and reassuring to see everything work exactly like it is supposed to! -Operations Staff

Wed Mar 14 19:04:41 PDT 2007 -- Partial DSL outage. A software problem in our provisioning tools caused a 'sync no surf' condition for about 8% of DSL subscribers. The duration was about 15 minutes. We are working to identify and correct the bug as we speak. - Eli, Nathan, Ross

Mon Mar 12 12:47:39 PDT 2007 -- Sacramento Area DSL Circuit Upgrade. Early Wednesday morning at approximately 12:01 AM, the circuit that handles all DSL traffic for the Sacramento area is going to be migrated to a new, larger circuit. Customers may experience up to 30 minutes downtime as they are migrated in batches from the old to new circuit. -Nathan and Kelsey ;)
Note the proper redundancy, and the multiple employees capable of handling problems.
