Default Operation 242 GT: 9 Months Later *Warning: TONS of pics, honestly*

Got this car last summer. It didn't run real well. Would start, then wouldn't idle. Eventually it wouldn't start at all. So I took a bunch of **** off, cleaned parts and replaced the follwing:

-New plugs
-New wires
-New intake manifold gasket
-New throttle body gasket
-New upper and lower fuel injector seals
-Replaced cracked and/or worn vaccum lines
-Replaced broken mount for fuel distributor
-New battery

That's about all I can think of right now. Put it all together and got it to start and drove her around a little bit. Then she died and wouldn't start. Frustrated and confused, not to mention winter was coming, I put my mind to work on a solution and let her be for a bit. Then a warm day and I went to work. Found two leaks in the fuel lines; one in the tank and one just outside the tank. Fixed those and that is what got her to running tip top. Now for the pictures:

These are from when I was taking her apart and replacing ish:

I did take the distributor and all the fuel lines out too, along with the injectors but I didn't take a picture then.

OK, these are fom the first drive, before I found the fuel leaks:

And here is the motor put back together:

Then I was going to have her painted, this is before she went in for a fresh coat...all sanded down:

Yeah, that's my big pimpin' pick-up too.

That's everything I took off.

I repainted the trim with Rust-o-leum (sp?) satin black.

Word.

These are some pics I took after the paint job:

That's my buddy Zac's 940 Turbo. His TB name is yolk.

Alright, there she is in all her glory. Next step is a +T. I got all the K-Jet turbo ish and an exhaust mani and a TD05-12B. But, just a little teaser for that...here is the housing, wheel and actuator of a TD05H-16G that is going onto this 12B:

Yeah, I know...

I will be posting more pictures of the +T process and will do a write-up of how I went about it. Sorry about all the pictures, but hey...I wanted to document the project and be able to share it with people that I know would be interested. Thanks for suffering all the pictures and taking the time to check it out. Stay tuned!

The car looks great. Youve made loads of progress from when you first picked it up. Its see a summary of everything you and your brick have been through thus far. Im really excited about the T+ and 12b hybrid that is planned too. She should scoot pretty well, once all is said and done. Hopefully youll keep this thread well documented so others can follow and get inspired.

Thanks a lot man. And I know a lot of people bash them and dislike them, but I am poor and saving for a wideband and 3 in exhuast, so you can thank Maaco and their $500 paint job, that I paid $300 for.

All I have to say, is it looks better than it did before I sanded it down.

No reason to be embarrased about Maaco, even they can't screw up a couple coats of enamel. It's the morons that take their car to Maaco with bubblegum and bird**** all over their un-sanded paint that get crappy paint jobs and then bitch about it.

Looks good!

Um, semi-true, Maaco serves its purpose, but there are different qualities of paint and there is something to be said for a true two part base/clear system for final finish. But I have never been able to afford a paint job like that, so there is still no reason to be embarrased. Looks good mang.

Many of our cars didn't come from the factory with a 2 part base/clear system, why put one back? At least, I know mine is just a single stage or it wouldn't turn my microfibres paint color when I polish it out.

The two stage part isnt the only difference, you can argue it both ways. My dad's truck was painted single stage 30 years ago and it has held up pretty well. But as I mentioned previously, quality of paint plays a part. MAACO is not going to drop 600 dollars or whatever on a gallon of paint. They are also not going to use the same quality of paint that volvo used originally. I am not saying they are exactly bad, I am just saying that all paint jobs are not equal. And yes, MAACO can screw up a paint job, I have seen them do it. But so can every other body man. They have their purpose. Have you ever seen a budget paint job after 5 years?

Both of you have good points. Like I said, I would have loved to have had a fine paint job. All I can say for my paint job is that I, with help from my buddy Zac, did fine prep work. Maaco did their job, by putting the paint on. It shines and looks much much much better than it did before she got sanded down.

You can drive on over and check it out if you need to see it to believe it.

Love the car. Where in MN are you. I'm in Minneapolis near the U of MN. Should have my 1800 running in a month or 2. We should try to put together a drive.

And I am located in New Hope, just west of North Minneapolis. My sister lives right along University avenue, just west of 35W. So I know the area you speak of. And I am definatly down for setting up a drive.

Thats pretty much exactly where I live. I'm on 7th and 7th.

I'm going nuts with school work so I haven't had the time to get my car done. Gotta get off my ass and just do it.

Default Mini-Update

Just a little mini-update. And some funny pics.

Basically, this post is to all those T-Brickers that battle for the life and speed known as Volvo...but don't have a house...or a garage...or really anywhere they can work on car stuff. Other than the parking lot for simple things, building a hybrid turbo must be done on my living room floor...and, oddly enough, my bathtub (since I can't use PVB on my carpet, bad idea).

So, hear it is...my glorious beginning to taking a TD05-12B and adding a TD05H-16G housing and compressor wheel:

What!?! You act like you have never seen a guy shower with his snail before!

^^The reason for a new housing.^^

That's all for now. I know it's a lot of pictures for not much going on, I apologize. Just a little camera happy, hah. Thanks again for reading!

How did you get the trim off? I am repainting my '78 242DL and I haven't been able to find anything on how the trim is attached, other than it has some type of clip every 7" or so. I would mess around with it, but I realllly don't want to kink it or anything. Love the black trim, too. Will most likely paint mine a nice satin black too.

Either get a bone tool, or wrap a slotted screw driver with a rag and pry that **** off.

Sweet. Are the clips reusable, or will I need to find some at a junk yard?

Edit: Will the trim just snap back on to the original clips, or will I need foam tape or new clips or something?

Although pricey, use new OEM clips from the dealer. Used plastic trim clips tend to crumble. The original clips are a pain to remove. The new redesigned clips are very user friendly. You'll know what I'm talking about when you put them side by side.
