AN Fittings FAQ

AN (Army-Navy)
The AN (Army-Navy) standard was established many years ago by the US
military to set a common measurement for hose and fittings. It designates
the outside diameter (O.D.) of the ridged metal tube that is compatible
with each size of fitting. Still today, this AN dash standard is the
benchmark measurement for military, industrial and the performance hose
applications. These dash sizes are expressed as the numerator of the
fraction, with the denominator always being 16. For example, a -04 port is
4/16 or 1/4-inch.

its all cut/ paste, so it may/ may not be correct.

I would include the stud size and pitch when describing nuts.

Water pump bolts, nuts and other 10mm head hardware are 6.0mm X 1.0

Head bolt head size
What size socket is needed for the head bolts?
I'm doing my head gasket this weekend and wanted to make sure I have a 6pt 1/2 drive socket handy....

exhaust studs are M8 (older stuff is 1/2" head later stuff seems to be 13mm or has been replaced by that on most i see)
intake are the same
thermostat and cam cover are M6
gauge temp sensor is 5/8" unf (same throughout all models even 16V)

what size is the oil passage thats at the front of the motor by the water pump.

important info for the +t people who like their stock sensor where it is.

The timing belt uses sprockets, not gears.

the bell housing bolts are 19mm heads, and the torque converter plate uses 14mm.

the headbolts are 14mm .. or were they 13.

the throttle position sensor is held on with 2 7mm allen headed bolts.

The head bolts have 14mm heads (new style) or InHex 10mm(?) (old style). 700 series brakes use 10mm InHex bolts to fasten the calipers to the strut housing, and 5mm InHex to fasten the ABS sensor. I'm pretty sure the Bilstein HDs use a 7mm InHex fitting at the top. Crank pulleys are 22mm / 7/8"(?) (B19/B21/B23) or 24mm / 15/16" (B200/B230).

update for you to add in
td04HL-15G-7 with the conical outlet has an oil inlet port that is 12mm x1.5
(i just found this out the hard way :grrr: )
turbo for reference is from a 95 T5-R

My alternator tensioner bolt snapped last week for whatever reason and replacement was an M6 x 1.0. I used a bolt 70mm in length, but you could probably give or take a little.

There are a lot of changes
During the late 80s Volvo started trying to save some weight in the cars. One of the ways they did that is to reduce the head size on a number of fasteners in the suspension and on the engine. Bolts that were 17mm like the timing belt tensioner are reduced to 15mm. I think they did this around 1989 for the 240 series.

Shock bolts for the rear lower shock mount went from 19mm down to 17mm on the head and 18mm on the nut. The large suspension bolts like the rear trailing arm bushing are changed from 22mm down to 21mm. Just a couple of examples. There are many changed sizes that adds upto some weight loss for the car.

The best thing is to be sure you have a complete range of socket and wrench sizes and as you work on newer cars you'll need tools for torx fasteners for more and more fasteners on the car.

tho i do have a question ... for the fuel rail ... m6 thread ... what kind of fitting do i need to T into the stock line @ the rail on a 7/9 series?

there really isn't anything
its a volvo/euro proprietary fitting thats just not used on anything else
i've got a modified fuel line you can have if you want
its got the special compression fittings to connect to the stock lines, gives you a 1/8th npt femal connector. right now i have a 6ft section of parker fuel hose on it with a plug on the end to quiet the system

a far better option is to clip off the stock input line, braze the hole shut and then get a steel weld on barb fitting and have it welded to the ass end of the fuel rail
then run some 3/8th line to the fuel filter

90 760 Turbo Wagon Spec Sheet
I am looking at a 90 760 Turbo Wagon as my next project. Can anyone point me towards a list of stock specs? (Wheelbase/track/overall length/weight and such)
Any special problem areas to look for??
