240 Toe adjustment maxed out.

Weird issue…
‘88 240. Prior owner serviced the ZF rack but didn’t didn’t change the outer tie rod ends. Assuming the service was done correctly, I bough replacement outers and using BNE quick steer roll correction. Set on oem setting (forward most hole) and could not get toe set to zero or any toe in. Took it to shop and they couldn’t do anything either.

I’m probably at just at a degree or two at toe out maxed out.

Any idea? My guess is wrong inners we’re installed, but how do I check? Anyone know the length that can be measured without taking bellow off?

Thanks.
B.

Just measured drivers side. ZF rack, 115mm from edge of bellows to 1st thread on inner tie rod.

Can anyone confirm they get the same measurements?

Thanks.

I think one of the 740 inner tie rod options are ~20mm longer than 240?

I measured on my cam rack, it was 101mm from bellows clamp to first thread. I think this will depend on which specific tie rods and boots used though.

I have a couple of ZF tie rod ends at my shop. PM a reminder to check them in a couple of hours. I'm headed there shortly.

From the thread furthest in on the tire rod to the beginning of the machined step in the tire rod where the rubber boot seats is 4 3/4 inches.

Same/compatible outer tie rods 2/7/9 taper in the strut housing/spindle.

Inners from same era/brand of rack will fit 7 or 2 (as in screw in place on the rack gear), but it won’t be right.
The 7/9 inners are slightly longer (~1/2” or about all the threads or adjustment it has worth?)

Had 1 240 that came thru the shop that for the life of me drove screwed up & just felt ‘off’ and after much head scratching & investigation, found it had a 700 inner tie rod on one side.

Alignment and toe was good, but the rack gear was off center with a-arms; so it drove like a tighter version of an A-symmetrical twin traction beam ford with something ‘off’ about it,but went down the road basically ‘straight’ without obvious fault or tire wear pattern issues or excessive wandery feel in the steering wheel?

Just weird bump steer and like it would kinda ‘topple’ without good on-center feel & predictable stiffer roll center…or something?

If you have enough thread, cut em down with a cutoff wheel.
