240 Air pump

I have a stock 76 242 that I am trying to revive. Can I just remove the air/smog pump and plug the holes it used to free up some horsepower and clean up the engine bay? Will this affect the K-jet at all? Has anyone done this?

An operational air pump takes next to no power to run.... Leave it on there if it works!
