Råda's orange'75 242 DL

Might as well make a thread about my project 242.

Bought the car april 2013, I had been wanting an unmolested 1975 242 for some time. And this showed up. Favorite '75 color along with the pea green. But the 113 orange has the great advantage of having the awesomest interior.

Original plan was to keep it stock because it was in "good condition"

Plans now is:
Fix the small amount of remaining rust
Repaint in 113 orange.
Replace the B20 with LS1. Might go with a B230FT for starters, Depends on funds
Some cool wheels

First pics I took:

I've started with some rust fixing. And excuse my welds, this is the first time I've held a welder.

I'm not too worried, I will find a way to make the swap approved :-P
Yes, it will be "ombyggt fordon" anyways when it comes to the LS swap.

Don't put non-volvo engine to this awesome car!

I'd do an N/A 16v conversion with twin weber carbs. Easy 200HP, and damn fun to rev the hell out of it. :-D
With a M90 box of course.

Anyways, good work!

So very orange.

4-cyl 10-28-2014 04:50 PM

That is an amazing color combo. I don't think I could deal with driving it, but it sure is cool to look at it. Keep up the good work!

Thing of beauty. The 70s are sooooo...... 70s. recently purchased a blue '76 242L myself. Same horrible b20 ;)

Sweet. Your weldings looks legit by the way. Not a lot who don't end up with a warped door sheet after welding patches in it.

Fixed.

2fast242gt 10-28-2014 08:32 PM

Are you using weld thru primer? If not expect to do the same repairs again in a few years :(

nel621 10-28-2014 08:40 PM

Is that your hobby garage? I like the wipers on the headlights.

Wind 10-29-2014 01:21 AM

I really like the door pouches as opposed to plastic door buckets that tend to bust, i've been planning on trying to do something similar to my car since my map pockets are split so it's comforting to see Volvo was ahead of me.

Awesome old 242! Good to see you learning to do bodywork and weld, I want to get there eventually myself.

Råda 10-29-2014 12:06 PM

Thanks guys! :)

Thanks, but no Volvo engine in this. I can get another car for that :-P

It's the garage at my moms place. I have no own garage yet sadly :( so garage space is what will determine the progress of this build.

BryantTF242 10-29-2014 03:31 PM

Not bad. What's the hassle with the engine conversion for Sweden?

Volvo have sat a limit to what they think the car can handle.
And the 240 is rated to 220hp and 275Nm with the vented discs and 1031 rear end.
So the donor engine has to be within that limit, unmodified and catalyzed if it's a 1976 or newer.
1975 has a more free regulation, engine can be modified and with out catalyzer but still within the limit.
That's the easy way of getting a swap road legal.

If you register it as a "modified vehicle" you can register with more power, depending on the cars weight.
But then you need to swap: engine, transmission, all of the brake system and rear or front axle. All to non bolt-on stuff.

That's the route I'm taking.

Råda 09-28-2015 12:00 PM

I've lost the storage garage for this car. But since I've bought an empty property for a coming house and garage build I placed it there.

I was going to drive it there, so I took the battery out of my '92 244, but it turns out Volvo switched the battery poles over the years so it didn't fit.
So I jump started it and it fired up, smoking and running bad. After a few jump starts I noticed the carb was leaking gas like a mother****er down on the exhaust manifold, so I decided to tow it instead.

So now sadly, it will sit until I build my garage. Like 1.5 years from now...

Out by the property:

A garage that will be built? Until then, it sits. Which isn't bad as long as car cover. Nice as usual Råda

This does not compute, I thought you were a 7 series only guy! Didn't you confess to this last week?

Great find, rad color! It's perfect the way it is!
