As long as the test light lights with very little power, this method works well. Not all bulbs will light on low level drains though. It's much better to use a meter like Mick said.

Do not try to remove the tube.

Big rod squirter block with na pistons is the way to go.
Even a small rod non squirter will last a long time at 15psi on a good tune.
