Here are the reported reasons for gear replacement failure in order of frequency:

(1) tooth fragment hiding in clear gear teeth.

(2) rotor jammed on motor assembly.

(3) fracture of solder joint on motor pins.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot a big one: "Found this stray white/red wire with a female spade socket on it and mated it with a lonely male." (connected tach lead from the ignition coil to the taximeter or cruise output, letting the smoke out of the odometer portion of the integrated circuit)
